I awoke at day break in the middle of the desert and the first thing I saw was a desert fox running over the ridge of sand surrounding the formation I had slept next to. I smiled to myself thinking about where I was. I got up and dusted myself off and went for a walk to investigate the desert in the morning. I came back and packed up my mat and blanket and had some Egyptian tea, before setting off back to Bahariya.
It took about three hours to get back and once there I was given a room at the hotel. I had a nap and woke up just in time for lunch. I had lunch, which was no more than a salad and tuna, which was awful. I settled for potato chips and listened to the manager tell me what I would be doing for the rest of the day. I was still groggy from my nap and it was very hot, so I just sat there nodding.
After lunch I had a bit of a nap and then went out dune bashing with a crazy Egyptian driver. Up until this point I had no idea Land Rovers were capable of flying! We launched over the dunes, stopping every now and again to take photos. There was a family in the jeep with me from Chile and I made friends with a girl around my age named Connie.
We went up to the top of a mountain to visit a house in which one of the first western explorers had lived. The view of the oasis was amazing.I was surprised at how well I handled the climb, it was very hot and I seemed to be able to run up the mountain passing everyone else.We headed down to the actual oasis to have a look at the water, which looked a bit supherous.
We got back to the hotel and Connie and I stayed up chatting until about 11pm at night. I said goodnight and walked back to my room thinking it was nice to make a friend after four months with basically the same people. I went into my room which was excruciatingly hot and immediately regretted my afternoon nap. I had a rather sleepless night as it was extremely hot and I was not tired at all. Back to Cairo tomorrow.
