Today, I decided to take a break from adventuring and go to the Cairo museum, which is only up the road from where I'm staying. On the way there I ran into Ismeail from Pharaoh's palace and he asked me where I had been the night before. I told him I was asleep, although he didn't seem to believe me. I went and had tea with him while I waited for the crowds to die down.
I crossed the main street in Downtown (an experience that took me 15 minutes), and bought my ticket to the museum. After being searched three times I was allowed to enter. As I walked in I saw the famous Narmer Palette and managed to have a decent look at it this time, not some fleeting glance like last time. No hurry today. Behind this there was an exhibition on 30 years of Australian's digging in Egypt, and all the artifacts displayed and stories posted were from Macquarie University, my University. I felt really chuffed at that.
I walked around the first floor and looked at all the statues and coffins and then moved onto the top floor and the Tutankhamen exhibit. That mask really gets me every time. I also managed to find the early dynastic stuff, including the 1st Dynasty Stela of Queen Merit-neith, which was tucked away in a corner, unlabeled amazingly enough.
I visited the Amarna exhibit, which I always love and then I decided to go into the royal mummies room again. I loved seeing Ramses II, who is possibly a face from the bible. I also found out that there are actually two mummy rooms and I was furious, again with our guide from last time, who didn't even tell me! This time I got to see Ramses III and IV as well as a whole heap of others. I know you're all probably not interested in dead bodies, but hey it's my thing!
I then left the museum and had KFC (Kentucky Fried Camel) and really enjoyed it. I had a Zinger and a piece of hot n spicy chicken, which here is still actually hot and spicy. I then rocked on over the pharaohs palace for tea and more sheesha smoking and left at about 10pm and went back to the hotel to sleep and wake up and go to Akhetaten in the morning.
