Day 69. Big sleep in today, our van park is quiet, leafy and spacious. Only heard one bulk carrier train shunting to the port overnight. Today we are exploring the pretty town of Geraldton. Starting with a walk and coffee in the attractive city centre strip and a haircut for Paul. Strolled along the very scenic foreshore to Town Beach and Batavia Marina to the WA Museum to see interesting relics from the Dutch trader 'Batavia' wrecked on the offshore Abrolhos Islands in 1629 and other Dutch wrecks over the past 400 years. Also a poignant story of the battleships 'Sydney' and 'Kormoran'. Lunch at the Dome, a retro looking cafe on the waterfront. Then we drove up the hill to walk amongst a very moving memorial to the 'Sydney' with 645 lives lost in November 1941. A visit to the nearby St Francis Xavier Cathedral designed by architect/priest Monsignor Hawes in 1916 revealed a solid, unusual building with twin towers and a dome and an interior which reminded us of a mosque! Finally a stop at the old Victoria Hospital and 1858 Geraldton Prison. A walk on the white sandy beach near the old lighthouse brought us back to our van. Dinner of tiger prawns, salad and a white wine. Cool 22 degrees today, rain has cleared, sunny again!
