Day 86. A lazy day exploring Albany and the nearby Torndirrup National Park. In the morning we toured the National Anzac Centre for a very personal and moving account of the Anzac legend. Also the Convoy Walk showing the details and photos of the ships which anchored in the King George Sound in 1914 before departing with over 41,000 troops to Gallipoli, Palestine and the Western Front. The old fortress museum with its gun placements and the Avenue of Honour also very moving. Back in town we toured the old Albany Goal and the replica of the Brig Amity which brought the first settlers, convicts and marines from Sydney in 1829. After lunch we drove out to Torndirrup National Park and to see the old Norwegian Whaling Station. The pristine white sandy beach at Frenchman Bay and Misery Beach were both very scenic, but of outstanding beauty on the Southern Ocean side were the Salmon Holes Beach and tiny Jimmy Newhills Harbour down from Stony Hill. Unfortunately the road into the Gap and Natural Bridge was closed. So may wildflowers on the sand hills and tracks. Back in Albany we visited our favourite cafe 'Kate's Place' on Stirling Terrace for afternoon tea. To end our marvellous day we drove up to nearby Emu Point for a look and then a walk on beautiful Middleton Beach. Dinner chicken and mushroom risotto, warm 25 degrees, sunny, tee shirts and shorts again!
