Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
We saw sheep and emu's on the side of the road driving into Exmouth. We didn't think Exmouth itself was that exciting. The Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station is huge and the towers are a stand out north of Exmouth. We stopped at Pebble Beach and Bungedi Beach which were pretty ordinary compared to the beaches along Ningaloo Reef.
I booked our site at Cape Range only 4 days ago online and it was the last campsite available. Apparently there are sites that are available on a first come basis but the sign at Exmouth advertised it was all full and quite a few people were turned away at the entrance so that mustn't be working too well. So it is definitely advisable to book in advance.
Kerry, the camp host at Kurrajong was very friendly. The campsites are a good size, the only downside is no water is easily accessible. There is a bore water tank but it is a 30km drive from our camp.
We spent the afternoon at the beach. With only 12 sites here, there was only one other family down there with us and we had the beach to ourselves for some of it too. It is a good beach for the kids being quite shallow and there are plenty of crabs in the rocks.
Most beaches in the Cape Range area are protected but this section is not. So fishing is allowed here but it also means it isn’t good snorkelling as Matt discovered. Zach tried his snorkel equipment but insisted on putting the goggles on the bridge of his nose so he could still breathe....he didn't make it to the water.
