We woke up around 730am and began the gradual process of packing up the van. It didn't take very long and we had coffee with Doris and Joerg before saying goodbye. They are heading up the coast of NSW and we have planned a detour inland. Since leaving WA we have managed to spot a large number of Australia's wildlife but have yet to spot a platypus. I did a Google search for the best place to spot one and top of the list was Bombala - only 2 hours inland from Mallacoota and too good an opportunity to miss. Bombala is described as the gateway to the Snowy Mountains and it's built along the Bombala River. The drive up was pretty and uneventful and we arrived just before 12. The council owns a small caravan park, which is great value for money at $23.50 per van (rather then a fee based on the number of occupants). We had lunch and coffee sitting outside over-looking the river and then we took the kids for a walk. We walked along one side of the river and then crossed over and came back up the other side. Annie complained most of the way but settled down when promised a lolly at the end!! We walked into town and bought a few groceries and then returned to the van for a relax. The caravan park has some amazing trees in it and most of them are dropping their leaves. Anna and the boys spent the afternoon trying to gather them all up and had built a little bonfire too. It has amazed me on this trip how little they need to be happy! Around 5pm we headed back down to the river to try and spot a platypus. We bumped into a jogger who pointed out the best spot along the river to see them and within 5 minutes we found one. The river was very still and glassy and by the time the sun had set we had spotted 5 or 6 platypuses. Unfortunately the photos didn't turn out too well as it was too dark. We headed back to the van and had dinner, followed by showers a bit of TV and then bed. Bombala has been well worth the detour!!
