Today we went on a village tour to check out the villages of Chamula and Zinacantan!
Now this was interesting!!!
In Zinacantan, we went into a local church, and saw a Shaman do what he does best. He sacrificed a rooster in the church in front of us... They also took bottles of soft drink as sacrifice as well, each colour represents the different colours of corn... Coke is black, raspberry is red... I think you get the drift!!
It is amazing to see how these tribes have managed to keep their religion and sense of community alive... Even after the onslaught of people trying to convert them to other religions, like the Spanish to Catholicism and now the mormans from the US!! It was such a great experience!!
We ended up buying an ice cream at one of the villages... Now I don't understand a lot of Spanish, but i did understand when a local village boy came up to me in a really whiny voice asking for licky. Hmmmmm, no!
I managed to find an early version of the cross trainer machine in one of the villages!! Now I'm guessing this is before the time of 'infomercials'.
Then Richelle and I hit the town!! We climbed another church, visited a museum dedicated to Trudy Bloom!! An amazing woman, she may in fact be my new idol. We then visited the market for locals!! Boy can the fruit and veg shops and the florists in Australia learn a thing or two about shop presentation from the Mexicans!! The floral arrangements were absolutely stunning, and the fruit and veg were nicely balanced liked pyramids in these beautifully coloured tin buckets!! It looked amazing! Although, would be more than happy for them not to follow the storage techniques for meat, poultry, seafood and bakery goods!! It doesn't seem to perturb the locals the shear number of wasps that are crawling all over their food nor the lack of refrigeration.
Tonight we went out for a 3 course dinner with a margarita all for the bargain price of $7.50! Mmmmmm boy was it yummy!!
