Well last night I caught an overnight bus from Oaxaca to San Cristobel. It went a lot better than what I thought!
We boarded the bus at 8pm. I had my Mexican mate sitting next to me... Ok he was a stranger... A pretty big one at that!! I thought to myself that this was going to be a tight bus trip. So off we set! To begin with I had to get all my stuff out in preparation for the trip, I then couldn't get my seat belt to work (yet again), so my Mexican friend was trying to help me with that, then I decided to eat my subway for dinner, and finally I couldn't work out how to put my seat down so my Mexican friend helped me with that as well! I think he thought that this was going to be a long trip next to some crazy white annoying girl, so as soon as he spotted a couple of free seats down the bus he bolted to them! Woohoo I had a whole two seats to myself!! Now the joys of being small is that I could curl up into a ball and fall asleep across the 2 seats!! Such a score as well, as my Mexican mate pretty much fell asleep 2 minutes after he moved to the vacant seats and snored quite loudly all the way to San Cristobel!! That's what I call a double score
I did wake up a couple of times... The first time I woke and looked out the front window of the bus only to find them herding donkeys off the road!! The second time I woke was at a check point, where a guard came on the bus to check everyone out, he also checked the toilets and the luggage compartment of the bus (they are looking for drugs, weapons or stow aways)! I did manage to get enough sleep to see me through today though!!
The bus arrived just a bit after 8am!!
We walked from the bus station to the hotel (about 10 mins) and checked into our really nice hotel. All the rooms are set around a couple of courtyards!! The room is clean!! It was so nice to have a nice warm shower with lots of water pressure as well!! Especially as I had to wash my hair today.
Today I dropped off all my laundry!! The best deal ever!! I dropped off over 3 kg of washing, that they wash, dry, press and fold. All this for 30 pesos... or just under $3 Aus. Yep, sounds like a good deal to me!! We dropped off our laundry at about 12pm, and it was ready by 5pm!! What a great service!!
Then myself and my tour buddy (Richelle - yes i know pretty funny Michelle and Richelle) set off for the local market!! There was so much to see!! I did have the living bejesus scared out of me by a lady who was walking behind me with a big dirty stinken turkey under one arm and her baby under the other.
Once we finished at the market we then turned our attention to climbing to the top of a church (set at the top of the highest point in San Cristobel). The views were absolutely amazing!! Behind the church it looked like there was a carnival... Although it appears they were just breaking it down today!! So there were about 5 men standing round with about 3 ropes trying to dismantle this metal sculpture thing the size of a crane!!! It was at this point that Richelle and I decided best we bail... As nothing good could ever come of that situation!!
Tonight we are going to a play about the Aztecs!! Should be good!! The cover photo is of one of the characters in the play!! Could be scary!!
