Last night, Richelle and I ended up going out to try and find something to eat! What we found instead was the disco bus! Now this is the best $2 I have ever spent! Pretty much we are all herded onto the top of this safari bus, that has been decorated with parrots and disco lights!! There is a sub-woofer in the front of the bus that blares out music which is a combination of reggae and mariachi!! The bus just drives up and down the one Main street in Palenque!!! Hahahaha, it was worth it just to see all the looks on the shop keepers faces... You can just see what they are thinking...here comes that crappy noisy bus....again!! You could understand just how annoying this bus could get if it drove past your work 100 times a day!! It's like that one annoying kids toy that just keeps playing the same tune over and over again!!
We then found a place to grab a bite!! Just as we finished dinner and were about to pay, the torrential rainfall began!! I had my rain coat, but it was still so hot I decided that it would be just as easy to run back to the hotel in the rain!! To be honest, it is so humid in Palenque, you are constantly wet from sweat anyway!! Seriously, you dry off after a shower, by the time you have put your clothes on you are wet again!
This morning we caught a bus from Palenque to Merida! Now this wasn't just your normal little bus trip home on the 366 from the station! No!! We covered some serious miles today!! 533km to be exact!! We travelled North East, the journey took approx 8-8.5 hrs!! After travelling inland for so long, it was a nice surprise to drive along the Gulf of Mexico for a short stretch!!
We caught a taxi from the bus terminal to our hotel... Our guide Lisa was in the taxi with Richelle and I!! As soon as the taxi driver found out we were from Australia, he was like 'kangaroo', 'I've seen on discovery channel' and 'Steve Irwin'. It's amazing that even after all of these years, everyone still remembers Steve Irwin!!
We settled into the hotel, and then went for an orientation walk around this beautiful city!! It has some amazingly old colonial buildings (which I will get a photo of tomorrow)! We then went out for a traditional Mayan dinner!!! Yummy!!
Well another day done.... It was mostly filled with bus travel, but when you end up in such a beautiful location it's well worth it!!!
