This Penze aire is a charming place and we'll certainly come to use it again.
We take our time getting moving, use the free service point and leave just before midday. A short but beautiful scenic ride takes us along the estuary from Taule to Carantec. Bimbling along the winding riverside road with no rush and nowhere to be is like being on holiday, as opposed to touring. All very restful after the busier nature of our long distance travels.
Boats rest on the weedy riverbed, gulls swoop around and Carantec's little islands stand out in the haze. From Carantec we return to Roscoff, have sandwiches for lunch then wander in to meet Michael and Chris.
Roscoff is full of people and cars having their last linger before joining this afternoon's ferry. Among them are some vintage Bentleys. We are admiring a sleek roadster when its owners return. The driver tells us a group of about 30 has been touring the Loire valley. He is rightly proud of his magnificent 95 year old machine, originally a 3 litre but refitted with a 4-1/2 litre engine. It starts up, sounds a loud claxon horn and rumbles off up the road, with its slow revving engine providing deceptively fast acceleration.
We meet Michael and Chris and wander around the town and harbour, stopping for a beer.
Fishing boats are unloading, mostly large brown crab and a few lobster. There are a few drizzly showers but nothing much as we start looking for a suitable place for an early evening meal but it appears that nearly all the restaurants are closed on Thursday evening. Of the open ones, one is reservation only and the others are not wheelchair accessible.
Chris says the marina restaurant has an 'all day every day' sign so we head that way, with Michael concerned about it being too far for the wheelchair battery and insisting on pushing on the flat bits.
We get there and find that despite the sign, a small notice in the window lists times of closure including Thursday evening!
Everyone is disapponted but there's nothing we can do but head back. We short cut across the top main road, avoiding town, with Michael's company to the top of the hill. Twenty minuutes later we are back at the van, battery still OK after a total of 12km today.
We ring M+C to say we're back then Ali cooks steak for dinner.
