The day starts well enough with weak sun and clouds. We watch the sparrows flitting in and out of the long grass in front of us. Before they land, they all stop and hover a few seconds then plunge into the cover. A few fishermen are out on the banks, and the canal and lock house look good.
We service the vans, say goodbye to Nick and Grete and go our separate ways. First stop for us is fuel at the nearby supermarket. There is a laundromat here too with a huge 24kg washer, so in just over an hour Ali gets everything washed and dried including bedding, for €15.
The weather forecat is poor and as we head west on the dual carriageway the wind gets stronger and gustier and there are torrential downpours.
The familiar coastline of Carantec and St Pol de Leon loom into view but we can't remember seeing it in such ugly weather before. Soon we are in Roscoff and turning into the aire which is abour two thirds full. A few people in waterproofs trudge back to their vans, some with soaking dogs, and some more vans arrive.
The van rocks in the wind and water cascades off the roof, but what annoys us most is that we came to Roscoff to meet friends who are in the harbour on their boat, but with weather like this neither couple wants to venture the two miles between us. We speak on the phone and agree to see what tomorrow brings.
After two weeks with Nick and Grete, who don't like spicy food, we can indulge tonight so Ali cooks chicken curry.
The storm continues into the night.
