Day 18 Gisborne to Wairoa 99km
We left Gisborne after a lovely breakfast with Barry and Sandra, Sandra off to her bed and Barry to finish the barbie ready for his birthday party on Saturday. Barry very naughtily offered us a lift to the top of the big hill we had to climb today. We declined with clenched teeth and white knuckles, departed with a carrier bag of their lovely mandarins from the garden and set off on the wrong road. Realising our mistake before too many miles, we doubled back and headed for the hill. I did moan and groan a few times but we made it over the top in two pushes and coasted down to the hot springs at Morere where we wallowed for 2 hours. We set off again and cruised into Wairoa, famous for gang fights and, yes, the best pies in New Zealand. Sad to say at 5.55 and it was shut. Mark is threatening to have a hunter pie for breakfast (liver, bacon, mince and cheese). Pity me on the back of the tandem after that lot....
