A very windy night, and extremely windy all day today - still sunny though, and not too hot. We did a lot of miscellaneous stuff today: first stop was the Visitor's Centre to just get a bit of info about our next destinations, then we spent a fair bit of time at the Redbank Bridge Lookout - watching the trucks get loaded up by the grader with salt from the huge mounds - those trucks then went towards the port, perhaps to fill one of the boats heading to china tonight? There were also 2 trains with iron ore which would have come from the Newman area - over 400kms away. The trains can be over 3kms long, and 1 of these was certainly close to that length.
Next, we headed down to South Hedland where it's a little less industrial - we checked out the shopping centre and drove past a very nice looking aquatic centre. On our return to Port Hedland, we took the road towards Finucane where a smaller rail line heads towards - not too much to do but lots of activity with trains and trucks, etc. There are lots of great playgrounds around, so we just had to visit the one near the Yacht Club (which was closed today!!)
For lunch, we wanted to go somewhere nice, so The Esplanade Hotel was the pick and it didn't disappoint - we had a fantastic taster plate of pork belly, dim sim, duck spring roll, salt & pepper squid. A small fish and chips was also very tasty and well presented in a little fish basket. Of course, the beverages went down well with the food!
Back to the van and Renee & Eamon set up a stall to sell the shells they collected up at Eighty Mile Beach! It was a resourceful idea and they made a special sign, and sat at the table attracting customers. They were selling for about 10 cents each, and a couple of people came by to have a chat, so that was nice. We had a lazy afternoon with yummy lamb for dinner.
