We all helped to get the van ready for departure and enjoyed a quick game of cricket with our friendly neighbours. Unusually, this caravan park has a 1pm checkout, and with only a 300km drive today Dad, Renee & Eamon went out for morning tea, while Mum got some washing dry. Then we all went to Woolworths to stock up for the next few days. We departed the very pleasant Esperance around 11.30 and headed north.
Norseman is at the intersection of the Eyre Highway where we begin the eastward journey across the Nullarbor (to get to Kalgoorlie, you continue north). Norseman's a lovely town with a great roundabout containing about 10 corrugated iron camels. There's also a bronze statue of Norseman the Horse in the town. The local pool was well utilised as it was about 38 degrees - we were tempted, but really needed to push on, so had lunch in some hard-to-find shade and continued east.
We had decided to stay at Fraser Range Caravan Park about 100km east of Norseman and it was a great oasis. About 12 vans were here in a nice circle with a playground in the middle, lovely gardens, great camp kitchen, and kangaroos and emus in the next paddock! We settled in, and Mum & Renee went for a quick run up to the 3rd hole of the "Nullarbor Plains Golf Course" - a par 3 with a synthetic 1 metre square grass patch to tee off and 130 metres to a nice synthetic green with a yellow flag in the hole. On the way up, they were confronted with a family of 5 kangaroos - 3 on one side of the road they were jogging on, and 2 on the other - they all just stared at each other!
After a yummy dinner cooked in the camp kitchen, a massive wind camp up so we secured everything and hope we don't have a headwind on our long drive to Eucla tomorrow!
