With lots to do today, we had an early start (for us!) and left around 9am to Torndirrup National Park where there are 2 amazing attractions. The Gap is a cliff top with a 24 metre drop to sea level. The huge chasm in the rock can be viewed from a platform along its edge. Complimenting The Gap is its neighbouring attraction The Natural Bridge. The large span of granite has eroded over the years, from the sea, and has formed an incredibly beautiful arch.
Whale World is situated on the site of the old Cheynes Beach Whaling Station (which ceased whaling operations and was decommissioned in 1978), located on the picturesque southern coast of King George Sound. We arrived just in time for the 10am tour with Dave our guide. He told us about the day-to-day operations of the station, and it was interspersed with some pre-recorded audio from large speakers describing how a whale was 'flensed' with some background noise of how it sounded, as we stood on the platform where it all happened. It was a pretty bloody job and hard work with 12 men taking 1 hour to break down a whale and put the pieces into the 'cookers'. After the excellent 40 minute tour, we watched a short 3D film about whales, followed by 2 short films on sharks and whaling in Australia. We had a look around some of the other exhibits, and lastly had a good look around the Cheynes whale chaser boat - it was very interesting. We all enjoyed Whale World a lot.
After some lunch, we went over to Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum on top of Mount Adelaide. There are guns, missiles, cannons, bunkers, and all manner of military memorabilia that Eamon loved especially. The 6-inch artillery and the bofurs were able to be moved around and played on so that was pretty good.
We headed back towards home after getting some supplies, and drove around to the beach at Emu Point and lo and behold, the Prelc's were on the water in their kayak - Renee & Eamon were mighty surprised to see them, and even more excited to learn they had camped right beside us at the Rose Garden Caravan Park. We all went back and while Mum went for a run down to Middleton Beach, Dad prepared for dinner, and Renee & Eamon worked with the Prelc children on a 'show'. After dinner at the camp kitchen, we were sold tickets to the show, and the MC (Eamon) introduced the first act (Renee & Zoe), a great hip-hop/gymnastics sequence to the song Timber. The 2nd act was Sam doing some cool hip-hop and tricks to the song Thank you.
After such a big day, it was time for bed as we're heading to Esperance tomorrow.
