Wow wow wow. What a fantastic day! We got up early, got coffee and drove across the Derby jetty; then onto the Derby airport for our 8:30 Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventure!
The tour started with a 30 minute flight on a 14 seat seaplane and I sat in the cockpit for this trip to Talbot Bay near the Falls. There we boarded a 600hp fast boat and were taken through the horizontal falls. The falls are like rapids formed by tidal movement - at the narrowest point there is only a 7.5m wide gap in the gorge they leads to a huge inland sea with s tide of up to 10m. Every 6 hours the tide turns - the falls are momentarily still then they flow in the opposite direction! As the tide rises you can see a difference on height on each side of the gorge. this occurs at 2 places (therefore there are 2 falls).
The tour also took us on a cruise around cyclone creek and mangroves. We were given Barramundi for lunch and swam in a cage where the sharks came right up to you. The boys even hand fed the sharks! on the flight back to Derby Josh sat in the cockpit and is now asking about flying lessons.
It was a fantastic way to see this beautiful magnificent pristine part of Australia that so few people get to see.
We drove to Windjana NP this evening.
