Happiness Is The Road
Good morning my beautiful campers. I woke up to rain this morning, but no worries it soon cleared. Last morning in Yallingup. I have really enjoyed it here. It has just been spectacular and the scenery here will take some beating. After all the usual morning stuff I drove to the local shop first to get some more of the yummy Yallingup wood fired bread, drat they didn’t have any! I was a bit disappointed but hopeful I’d find some elsewhere. Not a massive drive today, I’m heading inland a bit to Margaret River and then back to the coast to Prevelly Beach where I intend to stop the night. The drive to Margaret River only took about half an hour. I drove part of the way along Caves Road. This is the road that links the two Capes (Naturaliste and Leeuwin). This road passes through a lot of the vineyards that this region is famous for. Western Australia produces a lot of wine. The town of Margaret River isn’t quite what I expected. I thought it was going to be bigger. It’s a fairly small but lovely country town. I parked up and had a look around the shops. There are quite a few interesting shops here and I picked up some egg cups (which I’d been looking for for ages, without any luck) and some fabulous tasting Green Chilli Jam. I also had a coffee at Gloria Jeans Coffees, the closest thing Australia has got to Nero. The coffee is pretty damn good here. I also called in to Coles (Big Aussie Supermarket) to get some food and obviously more kangaroo burgers! Then it was back to the camper and to the petrol station. It was a little BP station on the main street. I pulled up and a great friendly guy came out to serve me. At the smaller petrol stations in Oz they still serve you, which I think is really nice. Whilst he was filling her up I told him about my trip and where I was headed. I told him I was going to the Conto Campground at Cape Freycinet in the National Park the next night. He told me that it was a wonderful place and that there are loads of Possums here. He told me to buy some apples, bananas and rock melons as the possums love them. He told me to cut the fruit up and place it around my camp area and put some in the tree branches just before dusk. He said that the possums will come down and get the fruit. I’ll definitely be doing that, sounds like great fun! He wrote the fruit down on a post it note for me which I thought was a lovey kind touch. I then drove just a short distance down the road to Rotary Park and had a walk through the woods next to the river. This place was like an Australian version of Styal Woods back home. It had a lovely vibe to it and the trees were really amazing and tall. One particular tree by the path really stood out and I looked up at it admiring it’s beauty. You could feel the energy from the tree in the air around it and placing my hands on it I could feel its energy tingling, like electricity. Walk done I headed out of town down Boonjinup Road to a winery that my dad had recommended. It was one that my mum and dad had visited on their trip to Australia about 10 years ago. My dad said that ‘the wines were to die for’. It is the Redgate Estate. I found it no problem and as you can see from the photos it’s in a beautiful setting. Some of thge coutryside around here is quite green and reminded me of England in one or two places. I was the only one there when I went in. I told the lady that I was allergic to red wine (for those of you who don’t know when I’ve drunk red wine in the past my face goes red and blotchy and puffs out and I feel spaced out and weird) I haven’t drunk red for years and years. Anyhow she put all the whites out for me to taste. There was a Semillon, a Chenin Blanc, a Sauvignon Blanc and an Oak Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. I tried them all! The stand out one was the oaked Sauvignon. It was simply beautiful and like no other wine I’d ever tasted. It starts with a taste of oak in your mouth before moving on to subtle gooseberry overtones. An immense wine. Unfortunately the C******nay wasn’t allowed for tasting for some reason. However when I told her that C******nay was my favourite and also because of my dads comments, and I think because I looked disappointed , she sneaked a bottle of C******nay out from under the counter. Although it wasn’t chilled it tasted amazing. It was very dry and reminded me of a really good Chablis. I came away with two bottles, the wonderful; Oaked Sauvignon and the C******nay. I’m going to keep them in the camper until January and open them with Jay when she gets here. We’ll celebrate together her arrival in Oz and the beginning of our 'Happiness is the Road’ adventures together. Then it was a short, 20 minute ish drive to Prevelly Beach. The camp site reception doubles up as the local shop and the bottle shop. I was assigned pitch no 20 but when I got there another caravan appeared to be in my spot. So it was back to the office. Apparently the people in 20 hadn’t told them they were staying and they thought it was empty. No worries though they put me next door at 19. This place is great, it’s not far from the beach and set amongst wood land. The facilities are okay, not up to the standard of the other places, but absolutely fine. There are hot showers, a camp kitchen, BBQs and I can hook up to the power. All this for only $15. Great value. The other sites had charged $40 and $35. I went for a walk to the beach and saw a very friendly lizard on the path on the way there. When I got back I caught up on my blogs and chilled to some music and had a beer. The couple next door in 20 were back now and they had a fireplace behind their pitch. The one I should have had, mine had no fireplace! Anyhow they had their fire going and it looked great. I went over and introduced my self. They were really friendly and were from Melbourne. They were taking four months to travel round. They had gone across to Adelaide , up to Uluru and Alice, up to Darwin and Kakakadu National Park and then down the Western Autralian coast. They told me of some great places to go to. It was also good to be near the fire as it does get quite chilly in the evenings at the moment. The temperature in the south west never gets as high as in Perth. Daytime temp today was probably about 21 to 22. Very nice though and I’m not complaining. I did go over to the BBQ with my roo burgers but they weren’t automatic ignition and you needed matches, and I’d not brought them with me, and the instructions for lighting seemed over complicated so I couldn't be bothered with it. Also I'd had to many beers by then. So I went back to the camper and cooked everything up on my gas burners. I had roo burgers with salad and a baked sweet potato, yummy. All washed down with another beer! The beer was called Rogers Beer though, well I just had to didn't I!?This campsite is very dark, no lights atall, so the trip to the ablution block later had to be done with a torch in hand. Very happy days. Nite nite
