Happiness Is The Road
DAY 332 - GRACETOWN TO LEEUWIN - FISH ON THE FIRE
Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, Western Australia
We had a lovely peaceful night. Before brekky we went to shower having first read the sign that was on the shower doors. It asked that showers should be limited to five minutes due to a low water supply. What! Are they kidding? It's been almost non stop rain round here recently! This sort of sign is quite common over here and we have seen similar notices at many caravan parks. This one though went one step further by stating:- 'anyone blatantly abusing this will be asked to leave the park'. We found this remark to be unnecessary and really quite aggressive. In any case how are they going to police this? They'd either need a staff member in the amenities all day timing people or encourage fellow travellers to grass each other up! Also how are people supposed to know when they have gone over five minutes? How could they prove a long shower was blatant anyhow. It may have just been accidental as they do not provide stop watch timers in each shower. This rule was completely absurd. They should have installed a device that cuts the water supply off after five minutes and will not allow the water flow to restart for a few minutes. We have come across these devices being used elsewhere. I wonder if anyone has ever been asked to leave for blatantly abusing this rule? Anyhow to cut a long shower short we had brekky and then left with still not a single kangaroo in sight. We went to have another look at the ocean to see if it was as wild as yesterday and it was. We stopped for ages and watched the waves blasting ashore. It was an awesome show again. After this and with the weather now starting to get a bit brighter we drove to Conto Campground in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. I came to this campground last year and I really wanted to return here. It was just as good as I remembered it, a beautiful place set amongst natural bushland. The only facilities were pit toilets but that was fine. Due to all the rainfall it was extremely green and lush today. The camp area is split into different named sections and we went to the Hamelin Hollow section as I had done last time and found a great spot which was wonderfully secluded. We had our own picnic table and fire ring. We had some fire wood that we needed to use up and there was a stack of it next to the fire ring too. It was about half three now and we decided to spend the rest of the day having a fire. I got the fire going but not long after the flames were flickering it started raining! We retreated to the camper van and hoped it was just a shower. Luckily it was and I soon got our fire raging again. At about five o'clock and with the fire now going very nicely we decided to cook our tea on it. We had some fish and we fried it on the cooking grate along with onions and tomatoes. It didn't take long to cook and very soon we had a wonderfully tasty meal. It tasted a bit smoky and was absolutely delicious. We kept the fire going for ages until we had used up all the wood. We sat and watched the flickering flames enjoying the warmth until we could see the gorgeous embers glowing when the fire eventually started to die down. We took heaps of photos and caught loads of gorgeous orbs dancing around us, revelling in the heat and glow of the fire and our love. We talked and talked and laughed and laughed and the time flew by. Before we knew it it was nearly ten o'clock and time for sleep as we were shattered. We had a pee in the bushes and then went to bed stinking of smoke and ecstatically happy.
