Happiness Is The Road
Good morning my gorgeous Possum followers. Last night was really peaceful, all I could hear was the sound of the waves. This camp site at Hopetoun is ace, really enjoyed it here. I hope I find some more quirky ones along the way. After breakfast I hit the highway to Esperance, about a 3 hour drive.
Not a lot happened today, it was mainly just me driving and listening to music and thinking so I'd like to use this opportunity to tell you about a person that I met properly in the last few weeks before I left for Australia. As you know my job before I left to travel was frantically driving around Bolton delivering and collecting parcels. My work brought me into contact with a lot of people every day from all walks of life and I saw life happening. During my parcel deliveries I met a wonderful chap called Walter. I had met him briefly at his door a few times over the years but had never spoken to him properly. He would sit in the window of his house watching the world go by and I would look out for him as I drove past. It was clear to me that Walter was disabled in some way and didn't get out much. Anyhow in the last few weeks of doing my parcel round I delivered to Walter's house twice and each time we got chatting and the second time he invited me in. The first time he said something to me which really helped me with how I was feeling at the time. I was getting really fed up with my parcel route and just wanted my time to be free and travelling to be now. Even though I knew my travels would soon be here I was still a bit down in the dumps. Walter told me that even though he didn't get out of the house he was happy, very happy every day. He said that he woke up every day just happy to be alive, despite his disability. He was happy just to be, to sit in his chair and people watch, to paint, to put bets on the horses from his computer and play games. He didn't let his disability get him down, far from it in fact. He said to me on that day "ENJOY EACH DAY, GET AT IT, ENJOY EACH DAY, GET AT IT". He said this a few times and what he said really resonated with me. I had nothing to be down about, I was very lucky and able to travel and what he said really helped to get my thinking back on track and just be happy to be alive. On the second time I delivered to Walter he invited me into his house and I got an insight into his world. He helped me to realise that what I thought were problems just weren't in the great scheme of things, he just helped me to see things in perspective. I told him that I was leaving work in a couple of weeks and told him about my adventure to Australia. He was very happy for me. Before I left he said again to me that he was happy to be alive and made the most of every moment. He told me that he was never bored as he always had something to do. He kept his mind active and it would appear only saw the positive things in his life. He didn't think about or dwell on anything negative. The way we should all try and be. He said to me before I left "THINK POSITIVE, NO NEGATIVE, THINK POSITIVE, NO NEGATIVE" He shook my hand and kept repeating this as I walked to my van. He was smiling as I left, a big beaming smile. In fact every time I saw Walter he was smiling. Happiness and loads of it just exuded from him. Every time I drove past after that I looked out for Walter and he was always there smiling in his window. He's an incredible person and I feel very lucky and honoured to have met him and to have had his words of wisdom imparted on me. His words had a big effect on me and still do today. How can you be negative when there is so much to be positive about. I do enjoy each day and I do think positive and I will do all the time from now on. Walter is a completely amazing and inspirational chap and I'd like to thank him for his words. I have his address and I'm going to send him a card from Australia to thank him personally and give him details of this blog, so he can follow 'Happiness Is The Road'. Because happiness isn't at the end of the road, happiness IS the road. All you have is the moment you are experiencing right now and you should enjoy and be happy in each moment.
Song Of The Day is 'Happiness Is The Road' by Marillion. I love the words to this.
