Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we set off to drive to Arthur River in the north west of Tasmania. From here we will work our way back to Devonport where we will get the ferry back to the mainland and civilisation in a few days. The drive took about two and a half hours with a stop at a very hill billy place, Smithton, on the way for some groceries. The journey was good except for the usual load of arrogant, aggressive and impatient drivers up our **** all the time who look like murderers! Why do Tasmanians all drive like tossers? Perhaps its because they learnt their driving skills from BMW drivers in the UK!? I think owning a BMW can only be allowed if you answer the following questions with a yes. Are you arrogant? Are you aggressive? Are you a 'corporate' obsessed with money and social standing? Are you up yourself? and Have you got a small dick? Anyhow we got to Arthur River without being rammed off the road. It is a lovely little, quite isolated town. We went to have a look at the 'Edge of the World' lookout. The sea is very dramatic here and it was very windy. The off-shore breeze was peeling spray from the breakers as they thundered in towards the river mouth. There is nothing but sea from here to Argentina. The sea must be very dangerous and rough here at times. The coast is littered with tree trunks and branches that have been flung up upon the rocks and the beach. It is a wondrous and powerful place. Mother nature at it's awesome best. We went to the Arthur River Caravan Park to see if there was any room. We rocked up at the reception and I went in to see. The reception was a really tatty shack which had a phone in it with instructions to dial a number. I did as instructed and asked if any powered sites were available. The line went silent momentarily and I'm sure that I heard a large intake of breath. The male voice on the other end said that they were very busy but that he would be down in two minutes. I couldn't believe what he said as the site had looked virtually empty to us upon driving in. Anyhow two minutes later an old guy with a big belly came down with a black bag. I said to him 'Are you very busy then today?' and he said yes and that he'd squeeze us on site 1. He got a note book out of the black bag, took some details off me and $30 and told us where to go. He was friendly enough but I got the impression that people turning up at his camp site were a nuisance and that he really couldn't be bothered. I think we might have disturbed his favourite TV programme or something! We did like it here though. It was tatty and quirky, just how we like them. There were a couple of other campers there and one other arrived later but he was nowhere near full!!! We saw wallabies on the site later on and we chilled, as we always like doing, for the rest of the day.
