Happiness Is The Road
After brekky it was time to go into the city. The bus went from right outside the caravan park. We were horrified at the price. There were no return or daily tickets available and the single price was $7.50 each! That means that it was going to be $30 between us for the day. To put this into context the return train ride in Sydney was only $6 each. This was the most expensive public transport we have encountered in Australia. The driver more or less apologised and said that since the council took over the buses the daily and return tickets were scrapped. They do though have a card system called Go Card but these cost $5 and you can't buy them on the bus. With a Go Card the journey would only have been $9 return each but for one day it wasn't worth the hassle. We checked on line comments about the Go Card later on and discovered that most Brisbane people don't like the Go Card system and that it penalises tourists and the occasional visitor to the city. People like us are basically being ripped off and we don't like that. Brisbane City had not got off to a good start. We had thought of going into the city today and tomorrow but due to the cost we decided one day would have to be enough. The bus network here though is very efficient and it only took just over 20 minutes to travel about 15 kilometres into the city. This is because they have a dedicated busway. It is a separate road all the way into the city that only buses use. The bus was express and only stopped about three times on the way in. This system is genius and must be easier and cheaper to introduce than trams. We got off the bus at Queen Street Bus Station which is underground right in the heart of the city. We had a quick mooch down the main shopping street and then headed across the bridge over the Brisbane River to the South Bank. This is an area of parkland with loads of cafes and restaurants. It also contains Streets Beach. This is a big swimming pool with an artificial sand beach and it is free. It looked really good and is a brilliant idea. We sat on the side of the pool and dipped our feet in the water. It was good to cool down as it was really hot today. After this we headed back over the bridge to the city centre. We grabbed some lunch and then went to find the Botanic Gardens. We had a mooch around here before getting the expensive bus back to the caravan park. We had enjoyed our day in Brisbane. It is a nice, clean and friendly city but to us it doesn't have the vibe and feel of Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide or especially Perth. We had seen all we wanted to see in the city centre and one day here had been enough. Once back at the caravan park we chilled for the evening. We needed the fan on as the nights are warm here. So different from the cool inland nights.
