Happiness Is The Road
It had rained again all night and was still raining when we got up. After brekky we drove inland a short distance to the edge of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area and the Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway. The car park when we got there was pretty much deserted which was good as it would be nice and quiet but it was absolutely lashing it down with rain. We only had one rain poncho between us so we sat in the camper hopefully waiting for a break in the rain. Our patience was rewarded as about half an hour later the sky looked brighter and the rain drops stopped. We went and paid to go in. The canopy walkway is owned by Queenslands Parks & Wildlife service and the lady at the entrance kiosk was very friendly and welcoming. There were only a handful of people here and it was beautifully quiet. All we could hear most of the time was the wildlife and the water dripping from the trees and plants. The walk took us through the incredible rain forest and onto an elevated walkway near the tree tops. There was a dramatic cantilever jutting out into the valley and there was a 37 metre high observation tower. There were 100 steps to the top of the tower and the view at the top was spectacular. We could see the rain forest stretching off into the distance before us. Everywhere was looking very lush and a very vibrant green. There were so many different shades of green. When we got to the top of the tower it started raining again. It was sweeping torrential rain but luckily the tower had a roof. We stayed up here for nearly an hour until the rain subsided and during this time no one else came up. It was bliss. It was wonderful to watch the cloud and the mist and just soak up this most magical and spiritual place. The rain forest had a gorgeous spiritual energy to it. Until this moment we had not really been feeling Queensland. This feeling changed now. We had high hopes of what was to now come. We just made it back to the entrance kiosk before the rain lashed it down again. We had been very lucky today and we feel that we have seen the rain forest today at it's most mystical and most breathtaking time. We had a lovely long chat with the nice lady at the kiosk and then we made a dash for the camper van. On the way back we stopped to look at the Nucifora tea plantation at the side of the road. It was a beautiful sight. A lot of tea is grown in this part of Australia. The road back down to the coast was very wet and full of the usual k*** driving like tossers. It had been our intention to get to Cairns today but with the bad weather we started looking for caravan parks on the way. We saw some signs at the side of the road advertising the Fishery Falls Holiday Park and it wasn't far away. We stopped here and it was a really good choice. It was a lovely quiet site set amongst the most beautiful and well cared for tropical gardens. They have won awards for the best camp site gardens and we could tell why. The lady on reception was extremely friendly and the facilities were lovely and clean. I must have stayed on about 150 different camp sites by now and this place is by far the best one. Absolute credit to the owners. It was dry when we got here but by bedtime it was absolutely lashing it down with rain again!
