Happiness Is The Road
It had been another very wet night. It was torrential all night long. Although we had quite enjoyed the rain at first, the novelty had now worn off and all this miserable cloud and wet weather was making us feel under the weather. We long for a hot sunny day and have almost forgotten what one feels like! After brekky we drove down the road to the Barron Falls. We expected there to be a lot of water there and we weren't disappointed. The falls were overflowing and the rain was absolutely lashing it down. It was a good job that we had purchased those ponchos yesterday. We put them on and had a right laugh at each other. We both looked quite ridiculous but what the hell, we stepped out of the camper van and into the deluge. We had a great walk in the rain to the falls. They looked very mystical and dramatic in this weather. After this we went back down to Cairns and did some food shopping. Then we drove up the coast to Port Douglas. It rained all the way there. Port Douglas is just off the main highway and the road there was palm lined. It seemed to be quite an exclusive place as we saw all the posh corporate resorts such as Ramada and Sheraton on the way in. We would hate these places. We just absolutely love it in our little camper van and it contains everything that we need. We found the Tropic Breeze Van Park which was right in the centre of town and we arrived there just as the rain stopped. We had the most friendly welcome ever here. The lady on reception was super friendly and helpful. We settled in and then I went to explore. I went to have a look at Four Mile Beach which had all the usual stinger and crocodile warnings. It was overcast and didn't look at it's best but I could see the potential. I went up to the lookout and then I went for a mooch around the town centre. It is a great place with a few quirky shops and loads of restaurants. It isn't overly pretentious and seemed pretty laid back. Port Douglas and especially Kuranda are how I imagined Byron Bay would be. They are both more laid back and have a much more chilled and spiritual vibe than the commercial over hyped nonsense that is the real Byron Bay. It started raining again before bedtime.
