Happiness Is The Road
It had been a chilly night and our last night in New South Wales. It seems to be much colder at night inland than on the coast. I still though wandered over to the showers in the morning dressed in just t shirt and shorts. It wasn't that cold but a lot of the lightweight Aussies had fleeces and hats and even scarves on! They're not hardened to the cold like the Brits. We headed to Bald Rock National Park this morning which was about a half hours drive from Tenterfield. We decided to have breakfast there. We drove there through some incredible scenery. It was looking extremely autumnal and the trees were showing some beautiful colours. The area around Tenterfield is known as New England and we can see why as it is very green around here with some lovely rolling countryside, very reminiscent of England in places. We had brekky in the parking area at Bald Rock and then I went for a walk to the summit. Bald Rock is a huge granite outcrop rising about 200 metres above the surrounding landscape. It is the largest granite outcrop (or inselberg) in Australia. The walk started through the forest but very soon I could see the rock loom up through the trees. The walk then took me straight up the side of the rock. It was a very steep clamber but great fun to do. The view of the surrounding landscape was incredible. After the really steep bit the path worked it's way upwards through some trees but mainly across the granite climbing steadily higher. The view from the top was phenomenal. It was almost a full 360 degrees view. I signed the visitors book that was in a metal box at the top, sat down and marvelled at the view for a while and then made my way back down on a less steep path which meandered it's way through the bush. It was a brilliant walk. After this we hit the road. Bald Rock is right on the border of New South Wales. We were not far away now from the Queensland border and after about half an hour we crossed the border. Our destination tonight was Warwick and after that we're going to Brisbane. We have planned to get to Brisbane the inland route so as to avoid the Gold Coast which lies between Byron Bay and Brisbane. Although I understand that the Gold Coast has some terrific beaches it also has heaps of things that we hate. It is a big strip of extravagant coast which is home to big fancy hotels and theme parks and kilometre upon kilometre of commercial hell. It's probably full of all the people we don't like so we agreed to completely avoid it. We did some food shopping in Warwick and then found the caravan park. It was one of those quirky caravan parks that we love full of tatty cabins. It was nice and friendly and we settled down here for the rest of the day. We're off to Brissy tomorrow.
