Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we went to say goodbye to Megs the calf and then we hit the road. First of all we went to do the waterfall circuit which started at the town of Millaa Millaa. The scenery around here is very vibrant and green and the scenery with all the rolling hills is it very reminiscent of England. We had been told this and it was true. Apart from the odd tropical looking tree every now and again you could have been mistaken for being in England. We stopped at the Millaa Millaa falls first and luckily we were the only people there. The waterfall was extremely beautiful and picture postcard perfect. We went as far up to it as possible and got covered in the spray. The weather was pretty hot today and the spray was lovely and refreshing. Next up was Zillie Falls a ten minute drive away and shortly after that Ellinjaa Falls. Although they were both very lovely they didn't beat the Millaa Millaa Falls for their sheer beauty. After we'd completed the circuit we drove to our next stop, the Mount Hypipamee National Park. We had a short walk here to the main feature of the park which is a deep cylindrical volcanic pipe with a lake at the bottom. Just as we were approaching the viewing area a couple of people were walking away, a very ordinary looking girl along with a rather rough looking guy. We had already clocked them in the car park and didn't like the look of them. Just as we got near them the guy made this really loud and quite vile grogging up noise and then spat on the footpath!!! This was gross. There was absolutely no need for this in public! He then proceeded to say hi to us and walked past. The lake at the bottom of the volcanic pipe was indeed a long way down and was a great sight. We admired the view for a while in order to give the grogger a good head start on us going back. We trod very carefully away from the viewing area so as not to tread in his spit! We got back to the car park in time to see the grogger and his girlfriend roar off in their little camper van. We just hoped they weren't heading in our direction. We had a spot of lunch and then drove to Ravenshoe which is the highest town in Queensland at 920 metres above sea level. The road was a little bit twisty in places and for a while we had one of those impatient drivers driving like a d*** up the **** of our camper. Eventually they overtook but in a stupid place causing someone coming the opposite way to slow down. They didn't make much head way though because we caught up with them on another twisty bit of the road. They had got caught behind the grogger who was going very slow and possibly grogging out of the window! Although we were alarmed to see the grogger again the fact that he had slowed down the d*** who had overtaken us was hilarious. We followed both the grogger and the d*** into Ravenshoe. We stopped here for fuel and lost the grogger or so we thought. After our fuel stop we hit Highway 1 out of the Atherton Tablelands and over towards outback Australia. We stopped about 10 kilometres away at Millstream Falls which are advertised as Australia's widest falls. They were indeed wide and there was a lot of water flowing. We had a short walk here to the viewing area and back. The scenery and landscape here was very different to just a few kilometres down the road. The vibrant green and lush vegetation had given way to a more open bush landscape. We were now heading west inland into the outback. We had intended to stop the night at the caravan park at Innot Hot Springs but we didn't like the place because the spa pools seemed to be hosting a bikers convention and the caravan park appeared to be full of f**ckers. Also the grogger and his girlfriend were here but they zoomed off before us as it would appear that even they didn't want a spa bath with ZZ Top and their roadies! Unfortunately they headed off in the direction we were heading. We were left in a pickle. Did we stay here and join the convention or did we head further west and risk seeing the grogger again? We both increasingly felt like we were in a National Lampoon road trip movie starring Chevy Chase! We hit the road west and hoped for the best. We saw signs for the Mount Garnet Travellers Park about 15 kilometres down the road. It was advertised as being peaceful and quiet. We could hope. The guy at reception was really nice and we could choose our own spot which was good. The site was a really quirky one but it was indeed peaceful and quiet. The grogger could not be seen or heard. Maybe we've shaken him off we thought. We chilled for what remained of the day.
