Happiness Is The Road
It had been a hot night on the garage yard. We were unpowered and had been unable to put our fan on. The nights now are getting fairly hot. The RACQ guy told us yesterday that the chaps from the garage would be there at about sevenish in the morning. We would be a surprise for them. We got up at about half five in order to give ourselves plenty of time to have breakfast and use the outside loo before they opened up. At around half seven a guy appeared in a ute. He came over to say g'day to us as soon as he had opened up. We told him that the RACQ had dropped us off yesterday and explained what the problem appeared to be. He said that he'd phone his parts place when they opened at about eight and would hopefully have us on our way shortly. By now all the other mechanics had turned up for work and another guy came to look at our engine. It wasn't the fan belt that had snapped after all. It was actually the power steering belt. Apparently we could have still driven the van but we didn't know this and the recovery guy concurred with us that it was the fan belt. Literally only fifteen minutes later someone turns up with the new belt and by five to nine we were on our way again. The guys at the Beerwah Exhaust Brake & Radiator Centre had done us proud. This was absolutely brilliant service and it didn't cost too much either. We were really happy to be on the move again. We were going to where we had been heading yesterday before the belt snapped, Rainbow Beach. We decided to take a scenic route through the hills to Mapleton National Park. The scenery on the way was stunning and we stopped en route at a lookout to admire the vista. The falls themselves were pretty high up and the view was spectacular. We went on the Wompoo Circuit Walk here which took us through some magical rainforest. The trees here were awesome. They were very tall, some with the most magnificent gnarly buttress roots. The trees were buzzing with energy. At one point on the walk Jay stopped and screamed. She thought she had seen a snake next to her on one of the trees. It was in fact a chain covered in green plastic that was holding some small tree branches together over the path! After the walk we had a spot of lunch in the camper and then hit the road again. We're heading up in the direction of Cairns which we noticed was now only 1594 kilometres away! As we were getting nearer to Rainbow Beach we noticed a couple of bush fires burning reasonably close by. They didn't look good. When we arrived at Rainbow Beach the caravan park we had intended to stay at was full. The whole place in fact was rammed. Upon closer inspection we decided that we didn't like the place. It was far too commercial for us. We had a quick look at the beach and grabbed some chips to eat and then we were off. One of the reasons we decided to go was because of the bush fires. There was only one road in and out of Rainbow Beach and we didn't want to get stuck here if the fires reached the road. I hit the gas pedal and we were out of there. Plan B was to go to a town slightly inland called Maryborough. It took us about an hour to get here and we were both shattered. The camp site was a bit **** and we were put in a strange spot near an old wooden outbuilding that had the potential to be spider infested! Before we could relax though I had an important phone call to make. I remembered that we still had a road toll to pay from our way out of Brisbane. With breaking down we had forgotten to sort it out. I phoned what we thought was the right number only to find that there is more than one toll company in Brisbane! Brisbane is an irritating city for tourists. The lady there though took our details and would pass the details on to the other company for the toll to be paid. So with that sorted we had tea and showers and crashed early for the night. It was so good to get a shower and at least this strange camp site had great showers.
