Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we hit the road to Brisbane. The scenery on the way was absolutely stunning and we'd have missed this if we'd gone the coastal route via the Gold Coast. We are so glad that we came this way. We headed to Birkdale in Brisbane's southern suburbs to have a chippy lunch. The reason we came here was to visit Chumley Warners which is a traditional British fish and chip shop and the most southerly in the world. I know about this place because it was featured on 'Phil Down Under'. We found the chippy with the help of Tom Tom but it wasn't quite where we expected it to be. We thought it would be right on the coast but it was in a parade of shops in a big shopping centre a few kilometres inland. I had read that it was a very popular place and it certainly was. They were queuing out of the door. Inside it looked just like a British chippy and more importantly it smelled like one. It was like being transported back to the UK. Although the Aussies do have fish and chip shops they just aren't the same as in Britain. For example they don't do mushy peas or gravy or curry sauce and the chips aren't chipped in the same way. They had a proper frying range imported from England and they even had the little wooden forks. Check out their web site chumleywarners.com.au for the full menu. We queued and when it became our turn we ordered pudding, chips and peas and chicken and mushroom pie, chips and gravy. We eagerly awaited our food and then took it back to the camper. We then drove to the Birkdale foreshore and got stuck in. We did ourselves some bread and butter. The food was absolutely delicious with the chips in particular being amazing. They looked and tasted exactly as they do in Britain. This was bliss and a lovely treat. We were going to make ourselves a cup of tea to wash it down but our gas bottle chose this most inopportune of times to run out! After our chippy chip feast we drove across Brisbane to the caravan park at Eight Mile Plains. It's a really lovely park full of palm trees and we were allocated a lovely quiet spot. We chilled for the rest of the day and only had a bit of toast for our tea. We were absolutely stuffed after our big chippy dinner.
