After going to the laundry and using the free internet there we went off to find a hostel. We managed to find a great one that gave a discount to spaceship campervans which was brilliant! We then went off to wander around Brisbane. It happened to be Buddah's birthday so there were lots of chinese stalls and lanterns around the ferris wheel. This was beautiful and also great fun trying out the food there and watching some martial arts being performed. We then went to the cinema to watch the new avengers movie as Seumas was so keen on watching it. This was so packed but a lot cheaper than going to the cinema in england.
The next day we went into a different part of town and did some tourist shopping (I bought some novelty kangaroo scrotum bottle openers. We then went to meet up with the Kenyan and his girlfriend. They were so lovely and such good fun. After that we realised we had to head off to Rainbow beach, a small town just below Fraser Island. We arrived there quite late but this was fine as we were ready for sleep. We just parked in the middle of the street which was fine and legal!
The next day we got up relatively early and a 4x4 bus picked us up and took us to Fraser Island. There were 8 other people on the bus with us so there was space to spread legs out which was an extra bonus. There is a ferry not far from rainbow beach that took us across to the island.
Our first stop on the island was a short walk through the rainforest on the island then some (very english) morning tea. We then had a lovely drive up the 75 mile beach. This is a recognised highway which is pretty awesome! We then headed for lake McKensie, a crystal clear freshwater lake 100 meters above sea level. This was very very beautiful. There was beautiful white sand all around it then dense rainforest after that. The beach goes into the water for about 20 meters before a big drop down to the bottom (not very deep at all). We then had a BBQ and fruit just above from it. There was plenty of food there and because of some law if we didn't finish it they would have to throw it all out! This just made me fat. I ate sooo much food then! Just above us there were 3 kookaburras who were just waiting for the plates to be left to swoop down and steal some stake or fish. This happened once and was hillarious but a wate of good steak.
After lunch we realised that something had broken in the bus so we had to be towed by another bus of the same company until a replacement could be driven up to where we were. This was excelent as it meant we had an extra tour along a completely see through creek. This was amazing as you didn't realise there was one there until the last minute.
When the replacement bus arrived we travelled to the coloured sands. These are pinicles of sand in different layers due to the oxidisation of some metals inside it. They were extremetly delicate and formed over 100s of years. Because the sun was at just the wrong height we sadly didn't get such a good view of it but they were still interesting.
We then went to see a shipwreck from 1935. This boat was completely rusty and was sinking into the sand slowly. It was really beautiful in it's own way, just sitting there slowly decaying and sinking along a massive long stretch of beach. After having afternoon tea and some australian biscuits we headed back on the ferry while the sun set.
When we got back, we cooked fish, chips and sweet potato chips. Very good! I really enjoy cooking for ourselves and teaching seumas how to. What an amazing day.
