We got up early to get to the docks to get on the ship. We had a bag from the company to stuff all our clothes and cameras in but were alowed an extra bag for beers or soft drinks that we bought with us. The ship is beautiful. It's a small ish tall ship able to fit 20-30 people on board with 3 crew - the deckhand, captain and cook. They all pulled their weight and we all helped put the sails up and pull the small motor boat being towed behind us after a life ring fell overboard. Our first place to go to was Whithaven beach. We headed across the channel to the islands on some choppy water. This was brilliant being at the front and having massive spray come over the bow and onto the deck. Some people didn't like it so much so went back to the stern under shelter. There was a lot of English on the boat! It was so weird hearing so many english accents after so long hearing such a diverse mixutre. I found it quite annoying which isn't too good as I'll have to go back home eventually!
When we sailed in between two islands were the waters were a lot calmer, we had a nice lunch of wraps and a selection of cheeses and fish followed by some fruit. We then headed off to a bay where we moored before heading to the beach. All around the bay and ship we saw turtles! This was lovely when they came up for breath but sadly they wouldn't stay up for long as they had lots of lovely food all over the place. half of us crammed into the small motor boat to get ferried over to the island. This wasn't Whithaven beach so that it was kept pristine. We first walked up to the lookout over the beach and got a couple of pictures. WOW. It is so so amazing! It's one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world! I could definitely see why it is. It's 98% silica, and been used for the hubble space telescope lense. We got a massive group shot and sstared at the beauty. We could see some sting rays and sharks swiming in the cristal clear water just off the beach. Only the finest sand is washed up onto the beach because of the way the currents flow.
We headed off to the beach down the hill. We got the beach and it was so smooth. So so fine it was squeeking as we walked on it. To go in the water we had to put on stinger suits as there was some deadly jellies floating around. This meant we didn't need to lather on the sun cream but some of the girls were complaining about how they weren't the best fasion statement. The deckhand came with us to the beach to take pictures and keep an eye on our stuff. We chased some sting rays around in the water, played some frisbee and a bit of rugby with some lads from Daunsties! (A school near Kingswood!) This was very novel and fun. Sadly we couldn't stay there for ever so we headed back to the boat and sailed off into the sunset. We moored later that evening after having some nachos in a bay that is well known for turtles and one in which we would be snorkelling in the next day.
After we had some supper, we all settled in and got the beers out. Seumas and I got talking to a chineese man who wasn't talking to anybody else. We felt really sorry for him but he was great company and it was lovely to talk to him about loads of things! Later on as people were starting to go to sleep after a few drinks, we were looking over the ship at some krill and other fish swimming around it when a couple of dolphins swam past chasing all the krill. I first thought they were sharks until we got the spotlamp out and saw them properly. Sadly they didn't stay long but it was lovley to see them while we could.
Me, Seumas and another english guy decided to sleep out on the deck under the stars. This was incredible as we watched the moon rise and the number of stars was amazing! Sadly we saw no more dolphins but up early for the sunrise tomorrow so time for some sleep! It got very cold overnight so we had to snuggle up in our blankets and pillows but definitely worth it compared to the hot and stuffy sleep people got downstairs.
Breakfast in the morning was great with a couple of cups of tea and fruit. The first snorkel site was pretty amazing. It was just off a sand bank and we took some nice pictures with seumas' go pro. It was brilliant to be snorkelling again! I love it so much and you feel so free! I had to put some vaseline on my beard so water wouldn't leak in. This was new to me but I went with it anyway. Time went far to quickly here and we had to head off to the next site. On the way we had some tea and cake which was lovely.
This snorkel spot was even more beautiful than the last! There was the option to kayak first or snorkel first so we snorkelled first and went round there for a while. When it was our turn to kayak we went searching for turtles some others said they had seen but we didn't see any but we did have great fun going in and out of rocks and creating general havok.
After everyone had got on board, We were allowed to jump off the ship onto the water. This was brilliant and supprising that not many others wanted to give it a go. Some people were starting to try the flips and were about to start the belly flops before we had to head back to the docks.
