Skydiving was something that we had decided to do a long time ago. Quite an expensive activity, especially with the extortionate rate they ask for the pictures and videos. Because this was the first time that we did skydiving we decided that we definitely wanted to get the videos and pictures.
We got up after a lovely lie in, but was sweating a lot because of the sun on the windows heating the car up a lot. We then had to go and have another shower in the lovely showers in the fairly expensive campsite. This meant we were nic and fresh when we arrived at the airport. We signed some forms basically saying that we wouldn't sue them if we died and that we understood not how to make everything go wrong. We were parachuting tandem because it is how first timers have to do it. The guy who was my instructor/partner is called James and he was a bit of a dude. Seumas and I got geared up and had some 'last words' said to the camera (I didn't really know what to say as I hadn't prepared anything!). We both then hopped into a tiny plane with our instructors and headed on up. The flight in itself was so so beautiful. You could see so many of the Whitsunday islands and look down into the stunning waters surrounding all of them. It's basically one white sandy beach after each other with turquise water all over the place. Because of the winds we were lucky enough to have to land just by the beach rather than just at the airport again.
After about 30 mins in the plane going up and up and up, we got to the altitude (14000ft) where we had to jump. As I was closest to the door I was the first one to jump. James and I got strapped together tightly and we shuffled over to the open door. I was hanging off the edge staring into oblivion before I had to put my head onto his shoulder so it wouldn't whip back and knock him out. Then we jumped.
The fall was so exhillarating! It was a 60 second freefall down to the beach before we pulled the canopy cord. Those 60 seconds were so amazing! I really really loved it, just flying down towards the earth at tremendous speeds with the wind whipping in your hair and buffeting at your face. When the canopy opened up, it was supprisingly calm and not the massive jolt that I was expecting but a slowing down until we reach the terminal velocity. This was now a peaceful fall down to the ground enjoying the view rather than the adrenelin. We did some moving around and swooping which was really enjoyable before we reached the ground. The harness sadly didn't fit me too well so as I was hanging there, it was cutting into my shoulders and groin areas. This turned into interesting bruises the following day.
We landed gently and managed to stay upright so didn't have to land on the hard, hard ground. Seumas landed shortly after me and he also had a brilliant time. We headed back to the airport in the companies minibus and waited for the videos and pictures to be compiled and also for our adrenalin to wear off. We then just headed back to the caravan park and relaxed, watching the videos again and got ready for whitsudays the next day.
