Thursday was a very exciting but nerve racking day! The sky dive had been booked. We had to get up very early as the weather was supposed to change and the wind pick up later In the day so we ha to leave the house by 7. Had a small breakfast accompanied by a few butterfly's in the stomach and a cuppa before signing our disclaimers and setting off. We arrived at the airfield about an hour later and signed in and got weighed. Then it all started very quickly, we didn't have to wait long before we were called over to harness up. We had some big, not very flattering trousers to pull up and the a heavy duty harness got fastened pretty tightly around legs and shoulders. Just as we were looking set to go the skydivers that went up in the plane before were becoming visible very high above us... Tiny tiny little specs just visible contrasting against the clouds! This sent my nerves skyrocketing, they looked so so high up just free falling, Amy couldn't even make them out. Then pretty quickly the parachutes we open and they looked like they were just gracefully gliding through the air on their decent. We were quickly called into a small open hut for briefing where they told us about the banana position we had to adopt while hanging out the plane at 14,000 ft and the landing position where you have to get your feet right up above your waist- easier said than done in a tight harness! It was very quick, I was expecting a bit more instruction/ any guidance as what to do in an emergency but we literally had the guy to be strapped to our backs to rely on. I did check with him how long he'd been doing this and he said 15 years which was comforting to hear, that's a lot of dives at 3-4 times a day on average. Before I knew it we were climbing into the very small poop poop plane sat in 2 rows, and in each other's laps successively. Our buddies did the final safety checks and cringey interviews on camera and we enjoyed the views as we climbed higher and higher. Felt ok until the big hatch door at the front of the plane was flung open and the wind rushed in, my heart skipped abit at this point! Next time a glanced back a camera guy had scrambled out and was literally on the side of the plane holding onto one bar taking pictures, the first 2 got into position and then very quickly dropped, with quite some momentum. Heart pounded harder! A couple more very quickly followed then I was up. Got into position, the wind was blowing feet about, luckily I was having to extend my neck and look upwards, I think I would have freaked out looking down. Then it's all a little bit of a blur, it all happens so quickly but the feeling and the experience is amazing. Originally the first drop your stomach goes and you feel your self turning in the air which is a pretty adrenaline raising feeling but very quickly your instructor has levelled you out and your free falling flat against the wind. This the best bit, the feeling is incredible, wind rushing past you and seeing the world opening up beneath you. I was expecting this to be the sort of roller coaster drop that I dread but it was brilliant just balanced against the wind, falling fast. I thought I'd also be panicking about the parachute not opening but I was very relaxed and loving every second! Suddenly the parachute opens and jolts you up and you can take a deep breath, my instructor asked me how that was and said I could take my goggles down, then it was just a case of taking in the breathtaking views of byron bay and the miles around it. The only hair raising bit from here was the turning as they slam a side down and your stomach goes again as you start whizzing around, my guy thought it was a great idea to whiz around in a circle a couple of times while filming! This did make me feel quite sick but the footage is good! We glided down with a few more turns and the dots bellow us became more and more visible before coming in for a very very smooth landing! Awesome, exhilarating experience with feeling you can't really describe to do it justice, I'd love to do again sometime. Amy also loved it, she followed me down and was the last one to tumble out the plane, she stayed very calm the whole way- I thought she'd be a lot more nervous getting up there! After getting that done early doors we had the day to mooch around Byron again and grabbed a celebratory meal and cider at the Hogs Breath Cafe. Later on we went to karaoke with Krystal, Judy's 9 year old, and entertained a few people with a rendition of the lion sleeps tonight- the crazy dancing at ' a Wimble way' seemed to be a hit...
