Leaving Memphis we went to Tupelo where Elvis was born and then we picked up the Natchez Trace Parkway. This was quiet and the road wandered through the flat countryside of Mississippi. The campsites are free and we spent 4 nights enjoying the drive. We then went to Vicksburg where a big battle took place in the civil war. The museum was as always very good and the battlefield site an amazing 16 miles long. It is so easy to understand the logistics of the fighting and there are hundreds of memorials to the soldiers from both sides.it is well worth the visit.
We also visited Mount locust and had a tour of a house dating from the 1800 s which was really interesting.
The parkway ends in Natchez and this is a gorgeous town on the banks of the river and actually the oldest town on the Mississippi. There are walks around the town and you can see all the beautiful old antebellum houses that have been so well preserved. It was really pretty and we even camped right by the river although it was expensive (£18 )we think that is expensive!!!!!!!
We have met a couple who we have spent some time with. Midge is from new Zealand and Michelle is American. We are planning to meet up in new Orleans and spend Christmas together. They are great fun and we have had a good laugh with them.they are in a motorhome too.
Today we reached new Orleans and have checked in to a state park about 10 miles south of the city. It is overcast but still about 18 degrees. Tomorrow we will drive back and check into a hotel for a Christmas treat!!!!! We drove through the French quarter today and it was full of life and people.
Have a wonderful time y'all. We miss you loads!!!!
Happy Christmas xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
