Yellowstone was fantastic and we were so glad that we made it as the park closed at 8 am on the Monday. We had 2 and a half days which was just enough to get right around and see most things. We saw Old Faithful spouting and we loved the red canyon area which was so colourful with its waterfalls and steep cliffs. We drove down to grand Teton but the main interior road was already closed so we didn't really get to see the full mountain range. We motored into Cody on the Sunday evening and then spent the best part of the next 2 days seeing the Buffalo Bill museum . This was absolutely fascinating and we passed hours enjoying the Yellowstone section , the buffalo Bill section and then the native American section and the Art gallery. There was also an enormous gun gallery. Each was full of hands on things to watch and do.
It wasn't too far to the site of Custers last battle and we drove the 5 mile road which covered the hills around the site. Again we explored the museum and watched the film about the events. The weather was really warm and as usual everything was really well presented.
Leaving there we drove to Deadwood and wandered around the Western town that is full of connections to Wild Bill Hick and calamity Jane. It is well preserved and looks really authentic!!!!
Having lived rough for 2 weeks we treated ourselves to a night in a hotel which had swimming pool and hot tub and was very cheap! Great!
The Black Hills were lovely with picturesque mountains and views. We saw Mount Rushmore and were really glad it was quiet and out of season.
The Badlands National park was so amazing we weren't expecting the stunning rock formations and the colours. The weather turned icy and there was a lot of mist. This quickly turned to snow and it was heavy as we found the Minute man museum and launch site. This was very interesting despite the deepening snow outside!
By 3 o clock the interstate had nearly disappeared under the snow and combined with the wind made driving impossible so we had to check into a hotel in Kadoka and hope that the storm will have gone by tomorrow.
