We had such a wonderful few days with our new friends John and Lisa and we had to drag ourselves away on Wednesday morning. We headed up to Oklahoma and camped on the edge of the city. Thursday we motored along the old route 66 as much as possible and we stopped off to see the interesting places on the way. Most of the museums are free and very worthwhile. The one in Elk city was huge and full of memorabilia and had reconstructed various old buildings such as he old blacksmiths and various old stores. We camped by their lake on a specific site that was free and even had hook ups if you wanted it. The truck was still causing concern but we limped along.
We continued along the old route and spent the night in Glenrio a ghost town with the remains of former buildings such as the motel and the cafe.
We saw a motor museum with lots of cars dating from the early 30 s through to the 60s . All were very shiny and had been immaculately restored, some were for sale for huge amounts ! I liked the 1950s cadillac in red, very classy !!!!
Heading up to Santa fe and then on to Los Alamos where the scientists made the first nuclear bomb. This is high up in the mountains and on the rim of a lovely canyon with great views across it. We walked and visited the Bradbury science museum which was huge and part of it talked about the bombing of Hiroshima and the scientists who were secretly located at Los Alamos and who developed it.
Monday we started to drive north towards Salt lake City where there is a guy who has said he can help to sort the truck out. Sadly we broke down on an isolated stretch of road 50 miles from the nearest town . It took 8 hours to sort the breakdown vehicle , despite the fact that we had bought insurance and we were brought back to Alburqueque last night at midnight. Today we are back in a garage and have fingers crossed that the guy has the knowledge to help us. Looks as if we will have to be in a hotel tonight and can only hope that it won't be for too long.
