Today we get to inspect some of the OTT creek crossings with a view to either crossing them or hopefully watching others cross them. We added a young couple to our convoy. They were on an 18 month trek around the country & while well equipped didn't want to damage car or camper early in the trek.
Topped up fuel at Bramwell Junction which is the start of the OTT & also start of the bypass road (Bamaga Rd).
We headed down the OTT to Palm Creek which had a 2 ft drop on entry followed by lots of mud. Water level was probably ok & the exit may also have been ok. No votes to cross! The track to Palm Creek was good fun & included a water crossing which was easy once I unhitched the camper.
We returned to Bramwell Junction & took the bypass road north. An access track took us into Gunshot Creek which we had no intention of doing. Fortunately, we were there to see someone do it successfully. However the entry required the car to be 'dropped' into the creek!
We were able to continue up the track to Cockatoo Creek. The entry & exit looked ok but the water level was high & running fast. As I walked across I stepped in a hole & went for a swim! Twice! Decided it was too risky. This is an especially pretty place with great bush campsites. Would love to have spent a couple of days there.
Back to the bypass road & on to Canal Creek Crossing where we camped. Now only 60km from the Jardine River ferry.
Great day today. Highlight was negotiating the creek access tracks & water crossings along the way.
