Day 349 (Tuesday 18th November 08)
Got woken up at about 5:50am to a loud knocking on the door! A guy that said he was security and there was no camping around here, we had to move on straight away as the police were following him down and would fine up NZD 500 each. Got dressed in record time and the curtains up so it didn't look like we were doing anything wrong! Drove off along with the other 2 campervans parked up. Went only round the corner to another of the carparks by the lake to use the toilets. There was a guy cleaning so went off to fill up with petrol and then back to wait. While we were waiting the guy that had told us to move on drove past but didn't say anything. Headed on and stopped by Lake Hawea for some breakfast. Drove through Haast Pass which had amazing scenery and then had a quick stop in Haast. Very small town so decided to carry on. Stopped at Ship Creek for a walk and then Knights Point for a look at the view. Just before we got to Fox Glacier cooked up some soup for lunch. Then drove up one of the roads towards the glacier. Went off on the Chalet walk. Amazing going through the forest and had some creek crossings! Managed the first couple but the one nearly at the glacier was a bit too difficult to cross without getting soaked and as nowhere to dry things headed back to the car. Drove around to the main viewpoint carpark and then walked up to the viewpoint. Again another creek crossing. Amazing to see the glacier and see how much it has retreated back over the years. Back to Hump Puppy and through Fox Glacier town. Had a look around then drove up to Franz Josef. Went straight to carpark for the viewpoint and as it was starting to rain went up there quickly before it was too bad and the visibility got worse. Another amazing glacier. Parked up in Franz Josef town and went for a walk around. Got tempted by all the nice proper food so ended up in one of the restaurants and had an amazing roast chicken breast! So good to have meat, veg and potatoes again! So nice to have something that isn't out of a tin! Very full went back to the car and did a bit of study. Headed a bit out of the main town to find somewhere to stay for the night as we didn't want to get moved on again!
