From Broken Hill we headed south to Menindee with its lakes at the start of the Darling River.Some of the lakes were dry but others had some water in them.We camped by the River at a campsite called Burke & Wills - it was actually the site of base camp for Burke and Wills, they left part of their party behind in this area whilst they head up to the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The little bugs in this campsite were numerous once the lights were turned on.The water by the campsite was not suitable for swimming in but was popular for fishing (we didn't have a go).

We spent two nights at this free campsite, which had toilets with proper flushing.David did a bit of touring the area on his motorbike.I also had a go - David is adamant I will be a keen motorcyclist before the year is out (by the way, I didn't sell my scooter, so he'll be there waiting for me when I get home).We had a visit from a local policeman, who was checking us out because one of his colleagues had someone on a yellow motorbike, not dissimilar to David's, ride off on him the week before.All was OK and the policeman gave us a bit of history on the area.

David headed into Menindee to get some food supplies.He said the local supermarket was nothing to rave about.Our lunch & dinner turned out ok.

Next stop White Cliffs via the infamous Wilcannia.
