First thing this morning we made our way over to the visitors centre at the head of the peninsular. We couldn't get our heads round having to pay $70 to see wild albatrosses or another $70 to go and see some yellow eyed penguins that we had just seen for free back in Oamaru.
Asking what was free to do in the area we were back in the van doing our own self guided wildlife tour. We made our way to one of the beaches and finally saw what we had come to see. Wild sealions basking on the beach! The first sealion we saw was huge and sleeping on some rocks, every now and again opening his right eye to have a look at us. Looking so cute and happy and with Claire wanting to touch it we were stood about a metre away. It was when Claire started making the ch ch ch sounds that you make to a cat that he lifted his head, opened his mouth showing us his enormous fangs and bellowed ROOOOOOAAAARRRRR so loud that after our heart skipped a beat we flew off the rocks so fast that we were soon no longer very close at all!
A little further down the beach we saw another sealion, but this time kept our distance(we should have brought a beach ball for them to play with). It wasn'y until we were reading a leaflet later that we came across " Sealions - Stay well back, at least 10 metres. They are not afraid of you and are aggressive" Oops should have read that earlier.
We spent the afternoon and evening back in the city, sitting outside the pubs and bars in the centre before going for a curry. There is a vibe about Dunedin that we really like.
