Overnight in the car park was fine apart from it being absolutely freezing! We got up and treated ourselves by setting off to Mcdonalds, breakfast, free wifi and most importantly warmth. After eventually feeling warm again we hit the road. We are heading for Milford Sound today, which is a Fiord (a narrow inlet with steep sides, created in a valley carved by glacial activity-thanks wikipedia). It's a long five hour drive to get all the way from here in Queenstown to Milford Sound but we thought it wouldn't be such a bad day seen as the drive is supposed to be amazing. The drive was very nice especially when we reached the town of Te Anau and went from there to Milford Sound, even if it was raining a little. The mountains were the biggest I've ever seen and the countryside is still surprising us. As well as having the usual fields full of cows and sheep, there are just as many fields full of deer. We went past an electronic road sign which said that Homer's tunnel would be closing at 5.00pm. We should get there a couple of hours before it closes but we were surprised that it was closing. You have to go through Homer's tunnel to get to Milford Sound. When we reached it it was a one way tunnel so we were stopped at traffic lights while people coming from the other direction could come through. When we could go we entered the tunnel and were instantly going down, James was only in neutral for the tunnel journey, the tunnel was extremely long too. After coming out the weather was different on this side, there was lots of mist but still raining on and off. It wasn't too much further to Milford Sound. We got there, there's one campsite here so we went to get a spot, after this we drove to the ticket office to ask about cruises of the sound for tomorrow. Unfortunately the cheapest one who we were hoping to go with had already closed. We got some information from a couple of others and decided to come back and get a ticket in the morning. The earliest (and cheapest) goes at 9.45am, back to the campsite for tea and bed.
