It was really difficult to sleep last night, I reckon that was our coldest night yet seen as there was ice on the inside of all of the windows and even small icicles! Apparently it had dropped to -3c in the night, no wonder we were cold. We made a decision to go shopping for some more covers for when we sleep. In the day time and the suns out the temperature is fine but it really drops at night. So we headed off to a shop to hopefully get ourselves some cheap blankets. We ended up getting some cheap duvets, one each so now we have two each to sleep under, we should be warm enough now. After this we headed into Christchurch, we parked a little out of the city and walked in. It was shocking to see how much damage had been done by the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. There were buildings being held up by scafflding, some still boarded up and then huge amounts of empty land where buildings had been. In the middle of the city centre they have made a make shift centre, someone had the brilliant idea of making the centre from metal containers so that's what all the shop, banks and restaurants are now. We had a look around, they've really made the best of a bad situation. We went to Quake city which has all the information about the earthquakes, it was really interesting to read about and listen to what happened. The first quake in 2010 hit in the early hours of the morning, it damaged a lot but no one was killed but the second in 2011 hit at lunchtime and 185 people lost their lives. Around 80% of Chrischurch city centre is being rebuilt. They are taking the opportunity to build things right and to have a brand new city centre with new earthquake technology in their buildings. On the walk back to the van we passed a cafe place called Pallet Paradise, all the walls and seating was made fom wooden pallets, they've been very imaginative and made use of all sorts to get their city back up and running. Back in the van we decided to head for a free camp site on the Banks Peninsula. We started driving there and passed through quite a few little villages which had been flooded and were having water pumped back into the rivers. Nearly every field we passed had some flooding, some just puddles but others were completely under water. At one point there was a piece of land only just big enough for the cows standing on it and it was cut off from everything else by water. We just couldn't believe how much flooding they'd had here. Once we got closer to our town the views became breathtaking of the mountains and the lakes. We drove into town and after double checking it was definitely the right place we parked up, made some tea and bedded down for the night with our double duvets each!
