We woke up pretty early and got breakfast, we want to be in Auckland city centre for 9.00am as we’d like to get the ferry to Rangitoto Island. The island is made from a volcano which errupted 600 years ago. Auckland city centre roads are not my favourite and their parking less so, it was hard to find somewhere to park where we would fit with our camper being so big. We got parked for 9.00am and got ferry tickets. It was extremely misty today, we were a little disappointed because we don’t think we’ll get to see all that much when we get to the top. The ferry came at 9.15am but was running a bit slower because of the weather. Once on the island there isn’t much, toilets and cover for if it rains then just signs for walks and distances. We wanted to walk to the volcano summit which was an hours walk. We had read on Trip Advisor that the walk wasn’t the easiest after all we are walking to the summit of the volcano! The walk was pretty intensive especially as this cold we both have is still hanging on. All the way up there was plant life in clumps then dotted about. The rest of the ground covered in rocks there were formed from lava, that was it, everything that was there. The rim of the volcano was impressive. The crater and the rim covered in plant life but the crater definitely there to see. There was a two minute walk to a look out which looked out on the crater. Also from up here we were supposed to be able to see the city, instead it was all cloud. It did feel as though we were above the clouds like being on a plane. The only other thing we could see was a sky tower poking through the clouds. We sat up here for a little while and ate our salad lunch we’d brought. There were some very hungry, curious green birds that joined us for lunch. They came so close you could almost touch them. The mist cleared a little but we still couldn’t see all that much. We walked about 15 minutes down until we got to a sign that pointed 15 minutes to lava caves. We did the walk which was up and over stones but worth it to see what the lava had left behind, some very cool caves. We had a look around for a while then walked back then carried on walking down to the bottom to catch the ferry at 12.45pm back to Auckland. The ferry was running late because of the mist and fog still. As we approached Auckland we went to the top of the ferry and saw the city it did look very impressive especially with all their Army’s ships in the water. We had paid for the car parking space until 13.36pm, we managed to get back to the car at 13.35pm. We drove to the Auckland museum, once we’d found a parking space (which was surprisingly difficult) we went inside. The museum is really nice, it’s set out differently to any museum I’ve visited before. It’s got a lot of Mauri history which was really interesting. We spent a couple of hours in here until around 4.00pm. We then visited the famous One Tree Hill, which actually doesn’t have a tree there anymore but it does have a U2 song about it. We could drive up to the top through the sheep and the crazy joggers, this place is quite high up. We walked and explored and sat on the wall for the beautiful sunset. After the sunset we wanted to visit one last souvenir shop before going, just a quick drive into the city centre and a run into the shop. Then we drove to a supermarket for something to make for tea as we really don’t have much anymore, then we went back to the campsite we stayed in before our trip to the northlands. We arrived at 8.00pm, too late for the office but we still managed to get a site and just have to pay in the morning. We set up and had tea, tried to get as much sleep as possible tomorrow nights sleep will be on a plane.
