Awake nice and early for the longest day of our lives. At 19.15 we fly to San Francisco where it’ll still be 23rd July but it’ll be 12.15. Our day is 41 hours long today with the time differences. We have to get the camper sorted and given back for 3.00pm this afternoon. Also after not having to pack our bags for 35 days and buying a few bits we now have to see if we can fit it all in. All the organising, packing, cleaning and dunping rubbish took until 2.00pm. We then had to find a garage to top up with diesel and refill our LPG gas cannister. All of this done for 2.30pm we headed to Mighty to return the van. We managed to get all of our belongings into our bags but they are so heavy now! Our van got checked over and we got our deposit refunded. They did a free bus shuttle to the airport so we waited for that and got taken by a friendly guy from London who had moved to New Zealand 30+ years ago. We got dropped at the airport and we got in line to check in. Just about checked in she asked if we had our visa wavers. We didn’t know we needed them, she sent us to Customer Service where they gave us the web address for the form we had to fill in and then pay $14 each for the waver. It took half an hour to fill them both out and get back in line. We tried again, this time successfully checking in. We then went to wait after going through security. Our flight is due to fly at 7.15pm, at 6.00pm we heard an announcement that the flight was delayed and would be leaving at 9.00pm, then at 7.00pm yet another delay 9.30pm. Not what we wanted before a 12 hour flight. Oh well reading to do and blogs to catch up on. The flight did go at 9.30pm and we were glad to be finally getting on board. The plane had three, four, three rows of seats. We were on a three with the aisle and the middle seat. It’s not the largest plane we’ve been on or most modern. We were a little gutted to find out there was no where to charge our phones on the plane. Also the seats weren’t that big so James wasn’t going to be over comfortable for 12 hours. We watched four films each and I managed to get a little sleep, James dozed a little but didn’t really sleep. We crossed the international date line, which was like going back in time. We were now back in time doing the same hours on the same day over again. We were pleased to arrive in San Francisco, we got off the plane and through immigration, got our bags, went through customs and got onto a train. The train took us pretty close to our hotel but we still had a walk to do. We checked in and dumped our bags, it was around 4.30pm we decided to go out for something to eat and get a drink seen as we had nothing. We went to Burger King for ease, thirsty we asked for a large drink. It was enormous, James got a small slush puppie, it was not small! We had a look around, there are loads of people begging and living on the streets here. We saw the classic American homeless guy with a shopping trolley of belongings, searching through the bins. We bought water and headed back to the hotel, it wasn’t long before we were asleep. We slept for a couple of hours before waking up to get showers and sleep properly. We don’t have tickets to go to Alcatraz while we’re here as we were too late to get them. But apparently if you go extra early in the morning to queue there may be a chance we could go. We thought seen as our body clocks are screwed up anyway why not give it a go. So now we’ll get lots of sleep before a very early wake up.
