Went for my walk this morning - 3.5 klms after breakfast. Gerry continued with trying to clean the van. We then decided to take a drive over to Cossack as there was an Art Show on there. Cossack is a small historic town which is now defunct and some of the buildings have been restored. It was once filled with gold prospectors but after 50 years the pearling industry had moved to Broome and gold fields further afield were more attractive so the town closed. Now it is used for cultural purposes, and this weekend was a big art show on. But when we arrived we were not expecting half the Pilbara population to be there as well. There were literally cars everywhere and people were jostling for parks a kilometer from the township. There was a fair bit of action on. Apart from the art exhibition there was a market, bands playing throughout the day, kids entertainment, Brazilian music and dancer and an array of food and drinks. We spent some time there, had a coffee at a table with a South African couple who now live in Perth and cannot return to Africa. We then went on to Point Sampson a lovely little spot with nice beaches. We tried earlier in the peace to get in to the caravan park here, but it was booked out. We had fish and chips at the tavern there which was a very popular choice - the place was packed. We had a look around the town and headed to Cape Wickham hoping to see the 3.9 klm jetty there, but we could not get access. We drove into Wickham and drove out to the Point. Yacht Club. There was a lovely beach there and signs up that prohibited driving on the beach because of turtle nests in the sand. The mining works of Rio Tintoretto are evident everywhere you look here - train tracks with trains full of ore each train 2 klm long, road trains, trucks, graders, roads going everywhere and little trucks with a stick and a flag on and identifying that they are mining trucks. We have booked in to go on a resource tour on Tuesday morning which should give us an insight into the salt mines, the liquid gas works and Rio Tinto mining here. Looking forward to that - we have to wear long pants, long sleeved shirts with collars and closed in shoes! David and Julie Burke and Gerry are going to play golf here in the morning so I might stay here by the pool or something. A busy day but a good one. Time for showers and salmon for dinner tonight.
