So today was our day in Naples. If I'm honest we weren't too sure about it as our experience of getting food in Naples had told us it was a s*** hole. What's more is we awoke to heavy showers! We got up and got ready but at 9.20 the showers were still going strong so we decided to leave it another hour before venturing out. However at 9.25 the shower had stopped and we rushed across to get the half past train.

There were a number of noted buildings around Naples but to our dismay all of them seemed to be closed or have building work being done. I was really disappointed about a particular building, 'the church of purgatory', which is known for its human skeletons that decorate the church. Very gothic.

Whilst in other places you find yourself looking up or about in Naples you can only look down. The floor is a mixture of glass, dog s*** and in today's case puddles. You know when you're lost somewhere and you walk down a street and think 'oh hang on, I've wondered into the rough part now,'...well the whole of Naples feels like that.

Just when we were ready to give up our day turned around. The turning point? Pastry. In particular the 'baba'. It is a cake that is so deliciously sweet and light. It was one of the most delicious things I've ever had and once we took a seat and had a couple of them the day started to improve!

First of all we seemed to come to a more touristy area. The streets widened, everywhere looked friendlier, the sun was shining. Shops lined the street and they were so cheap! We got some little Christmas decorations for our tree, a euro each, and for 20 euros I picked up a cameo bracelet and brooch for myself.

We then found ourselves at the marina, where our picture was taken. It was nice to walk along and watch the boats.

After that we went to a little religious commune, full of monks. It dated back to the 1300's and in the busy city was such a little piece of tranquility. There were beautiful gardens and an archeological museum to walk around as well although none of it was explained in English.

Then we went for some lunch. When in Naples we felt we had to eat pizza! We headed for a pizzeria and they were excellent. Adam went for one with cheese, cream, mushroom, ham, all the works but I kept mine simple with buffalo mozzarella and basil. I also got the biggest glass of prosecco ever poured for only 3 euros, honestly I think it contained half the bottle!

Then we went to the bourbon tunnels. It was certainly an experience! We had a 90 minute tour as part of the ticket price. Basically the tunnels are an ancient underground tunnel which was later used during world war 2 to connect the royal palace to the military barracks.

It was only rediscovered 10 years ago and the stuff left over was amazing. Some of the tunnel rooms were used as shelters and there are many leftover toys from children, inscriptions in the wall, beds, clothes, just a whole number of things.

The most amazing part of the tunnels though were the cars and Motorbikes. There are dozens stored under there, from the 40s and the 50s. The state of them is pretty dire but there was something very eerie and wonderful about them.

We decided it was time to head back to the hotel and grabbed a snack to go and got on the 6pm train back. We feel like we've done so much walking today and it's wonderful to rest!
