Left Vienna and after a 1 hour 20 minute train trip which included a passport check at Bratislava-Petrzalka station we arrived in Bratislava.
Got out at Bratislava-Hl.St. Station and went in search of a toilet. No luck as they were pay toilets and the angry man in the booth didn't want to accept Euros as we had no chance to get some Slovakian money.
Searched for an ATM to get some local money to no avail, ended up exchanging money in one of the seedy looking exchange booths. Walked out of the station and caught the number 1 tram from the bottom of the hill not realising you couldn't buy a ticket on the tram. A nervous 10 minute trip and we decided to get out opposite a public transport information booth and see how we could buy a ticket for our return trip. The lady in the office didn't speak a word of English but another customer did and via a three way conversation we eventually bought a ticket we could use on the way back.
Luckily there was a McDonalds over the road so we went in and used their toilets. We decided we should buy some food as well so asked the girl behind the counter how we could get to the centre of the city. She spoke very little English but got a co-worker who spoke good English and we sat down at a table as she showed us where to go. Very nice!
We walked down through the city to the Tourist Information Centre and bought some souvenirs before walking further down towards the castle. Unfortunately we did not have time to go to the castle and there was not much of a view of the castle from where we ended up.
We wandered back through the old town past the city walls and St.Martin's Cathedral. We ended up taking a few pictures at a quiet square called Hlavné Nám before continuing along Michalská to Michael Tower.
We walked back to McDonalds for a coffee and then caught the tram back to the train station. Caught the 12.50pm train back to Vienna with another passport check at Bratislava-Petrzalka station. We were on our way back to Vienna.
