Up at 6am and breakfast at 6.30am. Picked up from hotel by our tour company and taken to their office to pay for our trip to Naples, Pompeii and Sorrento (€96 each!) at 7am. Piled into a double decker bus and departed at around 7.30am.
Drove on to Naples with its very scenic location on the side of the mountains overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea. Only stopped briefly to drop off the people who were going to Capri as part of their tour which was a little disappointing. Drove on for another 30 minutes to Pompeii.
We arrived in Pompeii and had lunch at a bistro across the road from the ruins. Lunch wasn't bad but we had to pay for our drinks and were harrassed by a guy with a guitar singing folk songs who seemed to think it was compulsory to tip him for his singing. We didn't and he had a few attempts to get some money off us and only gave up when we told him to go away with a bit more force!
After lunch we assembled for our guided tour of the city of Pompeii. Tour was very good and our guide pointed out a lot of interesting details. Walking the streets and seeing the ruins of bath houses, bakeries, market places and the preserved remains of the victims of the eruption was fascinating. At the completion of the tour we boarded the bus again and headed for Sorrento.
Scenery of the road into Sorrento was magnificent as we drove along the edge of cliffs overlooking the town and the sea. Spent about 45 minutes in Sorrento, we were dropped off outside an extremely expensive souvenir/ornament shop and if we weren't interested in that then we sat there and waited for the call to board the bus again for our return to Rome.
We started the long trip back to Rome at 5pm and after a stop 90 minutes out of Rome we arrived back at 9.30pm and were dropped off at our hotel at 10.15pm. We went straight to bed after a long and tiring day!
