After breakfast we went to the supermarket and bought some supplies then returned to the hotel to get our coats as it had begun to rain.
We commenced the walking tour from our Lonely Planet Belgium and Luxembourg guide starting in the Grand Place. We walked down Rue Charles Buls past a plaque dedicated to the city by its artists and a statue of Everard 't Serclaes.
Continued on down Rue de l'Etuve to the famous Mannekin Pis, the statue of a boy peeing. This day he was dressed in a suit and tie. A surprisingly small statue! Walked on across Boulevard Anspach to Place St.Géry to see the Nero Mural and the Halles, the former meat market that now houses shops and cafés. We walked through a set of gates next to the La Lion St.Géry Bistro for photos of the Église Notre Dame des Riches Claires.
We walked on further arriving at Place St.Catherine for photos of Église St. Catherine. Continued on through Marché aux Poissons to Église St.Jean Baptiste Béguinage. We then returned to Place St.Catherine to see the Tour Noir, part of the old city walls of Brussels now surrounded by a modern hotel. We then went to the top of Parking 58 for the views over Brussels. The winds were gale force up so high and the rain was getting heavier meaning we did not stay up there long!
We stopped for a coffee in the Brouckére district before walking past the Hotel Metropole and down Passage du Nord to Rue Neuve, the shopping centre of Brussels. Walked along to Église Notre Dame du Finistére, an 18th century church that looks out of place on a modern shopping strip. We then made a side trip to Place de la Martyrs with a monument to those that died in the 1830 revolution.
Walking back towards the Grand Place we passed Place de la Monnaie for pictures of the Brussels Opera House before heading to the hotel for a rest. We then went and had lunch at Quick Hamburger restaurant near the hotel before walking on to the Brussels Cathedral and then heading down Rue de bouchers to the less well-known Jeanneke Pis, the female equivalent of the Mannekin Pis.
Decided to have a coffee at Haagen Das then rested at the hotel before going out to dinner, eating again at La Corte Gastronomica on Rue de Bouchers. We then returned to the hotel to pack for our trip to Amsterdam the next day.
