Today was going to be a full day on the road so we decided to make as many stops as possibly to break up the drive. Our aim was to head up the west coast from Queenstown to Greymouth.
We headed out of Queenstown up route 6 passed the bridge bungee again. Another opportunity to do a bungee, still I couldn't do it. Maybe next time. We headed north to Wanaka, the views of Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea were amazing. The still lake mirrored the snow capped mountains that lined the lake. We stopped several times to take in the picturesque views.
We headed down Mount Aspiring road, it wasnt long before the tarmac road became rough gravel, the road up ahead was blocked by a heard of cows. it took ages for them to move so we could pass. Stevie's mum and sister were hysterical with all these cows in the road. about 2km down the road, a flock of sheep blocked the road. It was a classic New Zealand shot. Although the sheep were less stuborn than the cows and quickly ran out the way. It was a funny site to watch because it took them ages to stop running away.
We headed further and further down this track, taking in all the amazing views, seeing the real New Zealand that we pictured before we arrived here. It wasn't long that we realised that we were miles away from anyone or anything.
It wasn't until the Matukituki river blocked our path. With a sign saying 'No Exit' and another saying
'CAUTION: - Back country road, beyond here vehicles may be unable to return due to river rising and scouring'
That when we knew this was not Route 6 to Greymouth.
We were halve way back to Wanaka when the road yet again was blocked by Cows, It tried to get them to move with a little toot of the hooter, but they just stood there. Stevi'e mum and sister were in fits of laughter i tried to creep forward, but this just send them nuts. We finally made it ourt of the cow gang... and continued back tracking. I couldn't believe how far back we took the wrong turn.
We finally figured out that we had ventured into Mount Aspiring national park. Finally back on track, we took in more of the amazing scenic views.
Around midday we reached the West Coast and the Tasmin sea. The Maori for west coast is Te Tai Poutini. The coast gavea tropical feel and showed us a whole new side of New Zealand.
Wiki notes it is one of the more remote and most sparsely populated areas of the country. which is probably why we didnt hardless see any one. We stopped at every opportunity to take in the mazing surrounds.
The Day was quickly drawing in and our next stop was miles away. So we had to put in some serious driving time. We reach the Fox Glacier around 5pm, There were signs up to show where the glacier was at different points years ago. It was decreasing and un unimaginable alarming rate. Although it is advancing again since 1985. It was a trek to the face of the glacier and with the sun setting we decided to come back to another time and spend the day on them. So we quickly jumped into the car and headed to the Franz Joseph glacier, The walk to the glacier was only 15 minutes from the car park, so Stevie, her sister and I quickly raced there. We manager to get to the base just before the sun went down. I imagined them to be alot bigger. We knew that both glaciers had alot more to offer so Stevie and I have decided to come back and climb them. - Guided ofcourse.
We had our way back, by this time it was dark. We knew we couldn't make it up to Greymouth so we aimed for Hokitika, it was 40km south of Greymouth and in reachable distance.
After 12 hours on the road, we finally breach Hokitika, a few circles around the Hokitika clock tower we managed to find an amazing room. Tired from the whole day drive, we all hit the sack pretty much straight away.
