Yaaah! A good night sleep, and lovely breakfast on the terrace of fresh fruit and an omelette with plenty of tea!
T day today :)
We met Emily’s friend tommy who’s from Bali for lunch at a sushi restaurant, it was lovely for them both to catch up and me to meet him! And of course to eat great sushi!!
Afterwards we went around the town market and got a few cheap garments to add to the bulging rucksack. Ellie wasn’t very good at the whole bartering. Where as I ask a price and then say no thanks and walk away after I’ve given them a figure that I’d pay of more than half of the first asking price that they give in to because I walk off and hold a completely straight face at them or shake my head saying “no thanks I’ll get it down the road for cheaper!”. Ellie.... stands there’s smiles and nods at them looking interested as if to say ‘oh yeah, that’s a good price!’ Then looks at me for second agreement and I just tell them no and walk away. Haha!
Got back to the guesthouse and they were all making offerings for a family wedding coming up. It smelt awful but looked so pretty. They were making what looked like really colourful play dough artwork but when it was drying in the sun looked like cookies. Very confusing. A lot of thought and work gone into it all but without being selfish or ungrateful I wouldn’t want it as a wedding gift, a gift voucher would be fine!
After dinner we found a bar playing some live music so we sat bought a cheap drink thinking t would be all juice no alcohol. But that’s not the way they do it in Bali, or Asia. My ‘Arak Attack’ which was arrack (the local super strong spirit) with lemonade and lime was pretty much a big glass of straight arrack. It was horrendous. I shivered every time I drank a sip and had to keep asking for more lemonade. If that doesn’t make me sleep tonight I don’t know what will. Ellie smashes hers but it had more pineapple juice in it and then she moved on top a glass of vodka, rum and tequila with a dash of coke (Long Island ice tea).
We survived the very quiet and dark market street on the way back and the one eyed monster dog. Ubud doesn’t really stay open much after 10pm it’s all about the day and the zen.
