We were up at 2.30am, it was horrible even though it wasn't too hard because we had only had 4 hours sleep so I don't think we were completely shut off.
The taxi was waiting for us downstairs and it apparently took 1 hour to get to the airport. Obviously they don't take into consideration what time in the day it is because there was no traffic on the roads - obviously! So the journey took hurst under half and hour. We sat on our bags and waited for the check in desks to open, they were really late and of course they don't like to queue here in Asia so they ignore the barriers and try to ram their trolleys into each other. We checked in eventually and tried to find something for breakfast because we were both starving, noodles at 5am doesn't start the day off great I must say!
It's a nice airport, everything is brand new. We had to walk over to our plane though, and much to my disappointment there was a lightning storm going on in the distance. I definitely wanted to be flying in the opposite direction! Our flight was on time and the plane was half empty!
It was weird because we took off in the dark but within 2 minutes once we were above the clouds the sun appeared. It felt a little strange.
The flight was good, we had our turbulence moments. I'm getting worse at flying, I really don't know what is wrong with me!
The flight was 2 hours 45 minutes, we landed in Yogyakarta and walked to the domestic arrival. It was such a small airport. It could only hold four planes in the parking area! I read that the easiest thing to do was get a prepaid taxi to your destination, it was pretty cheap though for a taxi and we went a fair distance to the centre of Yogy, I think it was 80,000. We got dropped off outside our hotel and were able to check in pretty much straight away. It was a really nice setting with a traditional Indonesian theme to it, the old Buddhas and funny masked dancers. Little teapot ornaments and some cool lanterns and Japanese plants. The pool looked so good, I couldn't wait to jump in! By this point it was 11.30am, we had only had 4 hours sleep so going out and walking around the city all day was out of the question. We did manage to walk down the road to book our bus to bali, we weren't going to be staying in Yogy very long because there isn't much to see only a palace. The Merapi volcano erupts almost every year which is near to yogy, the tour operator said that most of the volcanos are safe at the moment and the last time Yogy had an earthquake was ten years ago and it was about a magnitude of 7+ on the scale. Yikes!
The Bromo volcano tour is a little expensive for the amount of time you actually get to spend there so we are missing them out and going to do a volcano trip in Bali.
We found some really cute little souvenir shops and traditional Javanese antique shops which had some fabulous hand crafted ornaments in them, unfortunately another thing I can't fit in the rucksack and also have no where to put so it was a no buy zone. We went to a little bakery and I had some strawberry sorbet and Scott had chocolate croissant.
Then... We had to jump in the pool! It was so refreshing! It woke us up a little! Around 3.30pm I had to give in and take a nap, I told Scott I wanted to be awake by 5pm to shower and go out and have a walk around the town a little but that didn't happen, I woke up about 2-3 times and could barely open my eyes so he patted my head and pushed me back into my pillow and put me back asleep again like you would a baby! Haha. All I can remember was him saying 'your tired, shhhh!' And I was asleep again! I eventually woke up at 6.30pm. Whoops!
We walked around the main area for food and drinj. We went into a quirky little diner that looked like a bunker house with wooden patio tables and chairs, tin sheets on the walls with graffiti on them and then a band came in and started playing their cello, guitar and bongo drum. They had a good vocalist with a rusty voice aswell.
On the way back we were chatting away and I had my across the shoulder and body bag on, holding onto it when a guy just slowed his bike down next to us and held his hand out as though he was going to snatch my bag but when he realised if seen him and grabbed the strap where he was about to hold on to he just slowly drove away. I really would have liked him to grab it because I would have yanked him off his bike before we would have been able to get my bag of of me! I'm to cautious! Don't mess with me and my belongings boy! Scott had a big bottle of water aswell so he would have lobbed it at his head!
That's the first time ever since we have been away that someone has tried to take my bag or eye something up to pinch something. It was a little weird. I wasn't scared I was thinking more 'what is he doing is he trying to grab my arm or my belly' before I thought he wants me bag.
